I rang NZTA today and vintage rego starts on Jan 1 of the year of the vehicle, not the date of first rego.
So from March its $111 a year for the R90s.

what does "the year of the vehicle" mean?
production year or year first registered?

Year of production. If you import a 1956 Velocette this year you don't have to wait for 40 years from now. It is even cheaper when your pre or 1974 "vintage" is registered as a 600 or less.

The Stornello is 40 this years, although first reg in '78. Getting it going is one of this years projects.

If it is NZ new, I would have imported it in 1975. It may have been unsold stock from Emerald Glen Motors in Wellington. It would have been a 1974 model.

From some guy in Frankton - he had 8, sold 2, and used one for spares....we bought the five left as one lot.

He used to run a motorbike wrecking business. I can't remember his name. I sold him the 8. I will do some archaeology as I think I have a heap of original old Guzzi brochures etc I got when I was in the Guzzi factory.

As typical of a lot of businesses of the era, it was some mess run out of an old villa. Full of junk like Gnats...and some Stornellos. An Aussie mate of mine touring the country on a Falcone (white with red frame) found them, and we conned money out of others, went down and got the 5 for $3000 in twenties. One we sent to a collector in Aust, as they didn't get the Stornello there, which was a bit strange as we saw MV 125's just parked at the curb in Melbourne. I've lost track of the others, but did run one down about 10 years ago. I stopped using it on Waiheke Island when I found more suitable bikes for the roads over there, and practically hasn't run since.
