Thanks mate, the only people I have talked to so far have been Auckland engine re-conditioners...because they mention bikes in their add........and they seemed fine with what i want...i have just been trying to find people who maybe specialise in bikes...and maybe old bikes at that...i will need to find some bearings for the XJ as a couple are no longer available...

If anyone here wants work done at Taylor Automotive get in touch, I've know Tom for many years and I know I can get a good deal from him.Not many do! But his work is exceptional.
psy, while I talked up Johnstons I've since discovered that while they could(if seriously pushed) they'll charge like wounded bulls.

    i can get a 0.5 oversized set of 4 pistons/rings for US$450 shipped.

but since i already have 4 rings and two pistons 1.0 oversized i hope manufacturing another two pistons should cost less than us$450???

i've been told before that any decent machinist could do it (on the cnc machine i suspect) but then i was never able to actually find such a machinist... so, if you could ask or point me to a specific person that'd be much appreciated.

good point on the weight difference in materials, i wondered about that but decided it was no biggie... maybe wrong?

    thanks dodgyiti, caseye

Dodgyiti is 100% right, they can't be different weights, creates a Cats arss trophy! believe me.
I can still walk straight into Tom's workshop without being questioned and if I am it's Tom who tells em to leave me alone.I still know one or two of the staff there but seriously tom's someone I have called friend for many years.
Happy to compare notes prices etc Dodgyiti.

Mark!!...i need work done to me XJ550..the motors completely stripped...all looking good so far, all the parts are available (well almost) from the states....so....i need the cyclinders honed and then becuase some bearings are no longer available and to make sure i get the right ones, i need a workshop to measue the clearences (bearings and pistons) and advise what sizes i need to buy/find...xjbikes.com!!......once i have the main bearings and pistons sorted the rest of the motor i can do myself...in fact it is all pretty good for the age and condition i bought it in..well it is now i have cleaned it all up and polished it etc.....if anyone is interested i can run a thread showing the work being done
