I have been getting Toaster ready for summer use. My mate and I had this mad idea of building up two 500 cc BMW's to go classic racing on ( more like circulating than racing). We got a load of BMW parts in from the States off Ebay and then as usual what you actually wanted turned up locally. I found a R50/5 advertised in an old add from the T and E with pictures taken with a phone....so after 30 seconds negotiating it was on its way to Auckland. Arrived via Biketrans, complete with flat tyres....the driver had a good laugh. I pumped up the tyres, put some petrol in and it started!!!!! Two hours later it had a WOF and Rego. It came with chrome side covers and a touring tank, I had a 'toaster' tank so fitted that and bought some toaster panels for the tank. BMW made about 7 000 of them between 1969 and 1973. Why? ....Probably for the Police to ride in front of limos and the like, My one has stickets saying its from Pittburgh....probably used by a parking warden. Of all of them the 'Toaster' is probably the rarest as the BMW marketing department decided chrome was what the Americans wanted...and lots of it. Amazingly event the Americans hated the 'toaster' look and many were replaced with larger Euro tanks and the side covers removed......which now makes them highly sought after and collectable ( go figure). This particular bike has not had a lot of use and has only done 58 000 miles. I tried to sell it last year when I bought the SS...but there is not much interest in the powerhouse 500's....so it languished under the house behind all the other junk. I intend to ride it to work this summer and maybe take it on a couple of runs. I have put some pics up on the main gallery.
