Refreshing my pots

Ok you gardening guru's I have a question. I grow in large bags of compost, with crystal rain in them for added insurance against drying out. They are reasonably large bags. I need to replenish the compost, the media is flat and although still functioning I want it to be really good for summer veges. My question is this, should I sweeten the existing media up a bit before I add more compost? I have had some great caulis and broccolli and silverbeet from these pots so plently of nutrient left, they just look a bit tired to me. What should I do? Dig in a heap of fresh compost and keep on trucking as I am, or should I put some blood and bone in and give it a real treat?

Yep, I'd be inclined to add as much as of as much as. Compost will benefit most plants. Blood & bone would depend on what you plan to grow next, heaps if it's leafy plants, less if it's spuds or beans for example. I even stick wood ash out of the wood burner in the soil to add more carbon back into to the cycle. (opinion only by the way)

Yeah, well I bit the bullet and freshened some up with blood and bone, then added in heaps of fresh compost.

Hello! Is there anyone in here?

What is with this "Results" compost? Yeah, yeah, if I was a real gardener I would make my own, but I bought some of this shit the other day to refresh my pots and it sets like fuken concrete when it gets wet!

I just use the El Cheapo Daltons organic stuff - smells bad enough to work.

I'm going to put in some potatoes this weekend, because that's what my calender says.Today I hear just one of the growers in Puke is pulling up 380 tonnes of potatoes a day! I've never grown spuds before,I thought you needed a bit of space....not helped by my father once having our whole 1/4 acre in potatoes.I'm going to use the tyre method - do you reckon the knobs or street tyres will produce the best crop?

Spuds are easy to grow in dirt, I have never done them out of the ground. I dont have a heap of tyres, but I do remember seeing something about growing them in a barrel on some gardening program back in the olden days.

Results was el-cheapo-grande 4 x 40 litre bags for $20. You gets what you pays for

That "Daltons" is good. We always use their Gardenmix for new gardens. Gets everything off to a good start and the smell ( which I happen to love ) dies down after a few days. Best not let it dry out too much in Summer though.

That smell is "shit". Yeah I hear you. I have a heap of chrystal rain in my pots, so much so I sometimes worry they are more water than mix. Well "Results" compost is on my wait and see list, it smelled really bad but in high concetrations it sets solid ontop when really wet.
