If it isn't enough to have to fix 'normal' problems, then you find previous attempts.

one of the things i learnt to look for on the gs shafties are the splines at the finad drive (sa some models are prone to wear.
so, when i saw your first pic even without reading what it was my eyes went on the splines and i thought shit that's not right...

    thanks for sharing

those rivets might be grinded off if the friction plate does not engage fully with the cog (and that seems to have been the case looking at the plate splines).

just a guess, never seen one of those for real

on gs there is a drain hole at the bottom of the case that allows the water that gets in he starter compartment when the bike is on the side stand to drain through. when the starter motor oring fails it can allow some oil to get to that same compartment - and when mixed with water it starts to get out from that same drain hole. being unaware of this people often thing that have an oil leak at that hole so they attempt fixing it by plugging that hole up altogether. shocking. i've seen it quite a few times...

I have been reasonably lucky in so far as I have had no really bad surprises, bad things I knew about and used as bartering material, but no really bad surprises..

Except my Mk1 coming out of the factory with a virgin () crank that was so out of balance it needed mallory inserts before Dr Bob could even start to balance it.
It flogged the motor out in 53,000 miles!
