Contact details

croc and i have been tossing ideas around (at the time) apparently large inactive membership and one of the ideas was to perhaps ask members for more personal info like their real names and contact details so they could be reached in ways other than PMs with the view of promoting their engagement with the group, especially for members in regions that have not yet had a chance to get together (e.g. christchurch)
(at least this is what I got from our talk)

croc has come up with an excell spreadsheet of all the info collected so far in various ways and i have been adding info and highlighting active/interested members as i receive resosponses to PMs from last night.

having seen that already 55 people has responded to the PM that was sent just yesterday it seems that quite a few people are checking KB regularly and can be easily reached in that way.

i'm wondering what everyone thinks about how much contact info we should have about each other (if any at all), except what is required when registering for KB

If i get a PM from KB I get a email as well, i think i optioned it that way. Of the 55 they may not get on KB that regular and only got the message by email.
Great response tho, hope some more get active and start posting and coming on rides, the manawatu/ welly area numbers are coming up. Im ready for a welly/HB ride somewere soon !

I dont know about asking to many questions ,But what area they live in is vital ! If they dont want to supply that they can leave or get taken off the membership. It makes it hard to invite someone on a ride if there Province is "Under the sky" or some other stupid title like is all over KB

Psy, I might be missing something here, but i can't think of a good reason for collecting much personal info yet. Some of us have exchanged mobile numbers to make it easier at events etc, but we're not actually running a club as such. Essentially we are just a bunch of folk with a similar view of motorcycling, and a common dislike for rigid structure and formalities.

If anyone can suggest some advantages of disclosing personal info, I'll be all ears. Currently the KB software seems to serve our purposes very well IMHO, and I'm struggling to see how this accumulated info will benefit us.

why don't the members just add fellow members as friends,
that way you get access to phone numbers ect that you have already added to the site

Give the man a cigar. Personal info can be shared between people as and when desired. A contact number is all that is really required in the event of one of our members not turning up when expected (breakdown etc).

personally have no prob supplying a phone number or address... but I cant see how that is of any use to you ackers.
    Some hbers already have it.

I'm with Max, personal info can be exchanged with whoever you choose via PMing. Other than that a mobile number does the trick, for ride/meeting purposes. IMHO too.

i'd like to reiterate i was referring to CONTACT details only, everything else is naturally left to the individuals to exchange as they feel like.
i guess the background to this was about how to reach people who may express their interest by joining bftp but dont necessarily post or visit forum very often.
say, (like RDjase suggested above) someone wanted to get in touch with Wellington or Chch members to try organise a ride in that neck of woods. should we rely only on the PMs when contacting them knowing that some may not read them possibly for weeks (or months?) or do we ask people their cellphone numbers or emails so they could be contacted more easily? or do we leave it optional to supply a cellphone number?

I guess we'd need to ask why we'd want to hang out with folk who don't visit here regularly. If they are committed to BFTP, the least they can do is to check in periodically. To do it any other way (mobile phone, email etc) seems to defeat the essence of the structure we have here.

The thing that makes BFTP different is the lack of pressure for anyone to do anything they don't want to do, and permission to say so. We have a casual atmosphere amongst the group. From where I sit, BFTP is not about numbers it's about mates riding and talking sh!t with mates, and getting involved because they WANT to be involved. Most of us have enough pressure and structure in our lives already, and BFTP is a welcome escape. Let's not make it just another club . . .

I vote for leaving it up to the individual to supply their contact details, as they see fit. If people don't introduce themselves properly at the time they join, then they clearly aren't keen on getting too involved with rides or rallies. If they feel this way and we were to coerce them into riding locally, they wouldn't enjoy the experience and nor would we. Our BFTP forum intro has enough information for them to make up their minds just how involved they wish to become. When they do finally decide to get involved, we need to be ready to embrace them as contributing members. Just my 2 cents worth.

You need 10 cents now (can't collect on 2 cents)

Sorry but isnt it all getting over complicated and heading down an administrative nightmare route. I just want to ride my old bike and I love meeting new people who share the love of classic bikes.

If theres a calander event up or a meeting up I will try and attend if I can. Having regional groups and the like just seems OTT. If someone wants to organise a ride or whatever go for it and see who turns up. Taumarunui was brilliant and done through the forum and calendar without the need to email/pm to any great extent. If people want to join events they will read about it through the forum and through the calendar and its up to them!

Just my 20 cents worth (inflation)

thanks for your thoughts guys. the concensus seems to be to go only by the info that's available on the general KB profile and any other contact info can be shared on an individual basis. and in that way people can have as much or as little involvement as they like and are least likely to feel pressured.

Murray, it's still only 2 cents worth. Inflation has nothing to do with it. It was a crap analysis only worth 2 cents. And who's going to try and collect it?
