I remember previous threads re the dangers or otherwise of using paypal when selling, but can't seem to find them.

I've had a couple of good offers for the VF from dudes in Australia who wish to pay me via Paypal. I've bought a couple of items using Paypal, but never sold.

Does anyone know, in simple terms, what the rules are re Paypal, and the dangers when selling?

I think the concerns are to do with scammers using fake paypal sites to con money out of you. There is a thread that was active a couple of days ago about it. Be careful is my advice. I like Bank transfer myself.

I had someone wanting to pay for my bike via paypal.
Read the emails carefully and obviously do not part with any money.
If in doubt. contact paypal and they will verify if the emails you recieve from "paypal" are real or fake.

I got letters from "paypal" telling me my money was in my account and all I had to do was put $1500 into the account of a shiping company. and I would be reimbursed. But it was a scam.
I recieved a number of letters following, that threatened me with legal action if I didnt pay up.

Fucken scammers. some one has to try take an honest mans living.

A bank transfer from Oz will cost you about 15-25 bucks depending on your bank, not worth it for selling parts, but fine for selling a bike. Safer in some respect than Paypal

As a seller, Paypal is only worth using if you are continually selling articles on line. It's quite convenient to use it as a buyer too, but you do need to be wary. I use it a lot buying stuff from the US, but won't deal with anyone unless they have a track record with mainly positive feedback( 98% or better).
Seller's get charged a 4% fee based on the value of each transaction.

When I bought my 1150 from the US, I transferred the money through the Banking System. I asked for photos and a video clip of the bike running. The video also visually identified the vendor. It took 6 weeks of emails and phone calls to judge how trustworthy the private vendor was. If the vendor avoids personal contact, back off.

Don't part with your goods until their money is in your bank account!!

I got offers from 4 different people, but since i told them I wouldn't use Paypal I haven't heard back from any of them yet. Sums it up in my opinion! Nuff said. Cash talks.

I was flogging off my vw parts collection in 2001 on Ebay to finance an oveseas Kombi trip.
I started off getting payments by cash wrapped in carbon paper ( I'm told its illegal to post cash....)
    Then Western Union....
Then I took a leap of faith ( it was 2000)....and accepted Paypal.
    Business boomed and no problems.
    Simple rule....no payment no goods.
However beware of emails supposedly from Ebay and Paypal asking to " update details" ....scammers have found a way to clone email address's and wesite addresses.
Just log on from the main website.
The Yanks love credit cards, Ebay and Paypal....if anything New Zealand sounds very much like Nigeria....
    have fun.
