In the context of the book, it is all about taking ownership of your stuff, rather than your stuff taking ownership of you. You can fix something and there is something organic and rewarding about working with your hands and tools to put things into order in your life independantly of others.

What seperates us as humans from the animals is tools and our ability to use them. Animals display high levels of intellect in some cases but it is our ability to use tools that seperate us, thinkers think, thinkers with tools create.
You might have an old bike because it reminds you of times gone by, but it also represents something you can own and take ownership of. A modern bike owns you, if the computer fails you have to take it to a dealeship to find out why- the dealership owns you, the bike owns you, you are helpless to control or take control of the concrete things in your life and lack of control over these things does not a happy person make. You lose your independance and become dependant. Ability to think is not an ability to do, an ability to think and do is a higher level of human competence and places you above the mere thinker.
The thinker will stand on the side of the road and no thinking will solve the problem, whereas thinking and doing will.

The world of consumerism was invented to keep people working, credit debt keeps people working, throw away society keeps people working to buy a new one because the skills to repair have been substuted by the skill to earn and replace.

Next week...nearly there, Henderson house is pretty fumy what with my old school obsession to paint doors and windows and wet areas with enemal. Can't wait to get out of here now, even though it has running water some of which is hot as well

Plus I got's a full tank of gas in my new-ish long awaited quad bike and I'm busting to fang it through the mud and stuff. It's pretty grunty compaired to farmer Bob's TRX Honda 500 that they all seem to have. The Zookie 500 is more power baby! 4 wheel powerslides on the wet grass Will be most likely wearing all my gear if a fang is in order because you know that if I crap off, it will be either gorse or, shudder, blackberry I will land in

As for me Guzzis Max, they are always a physical (pushing) and interleckietual challenge that keeps me entertained and tests me. I love it
