Hey everybody.sorry I've not been aboutm much of late, my dads been crook but is OK now so it's back into recondition mode for me and the coal burner. to that end I started to ring around today and got a very nasty surprise. They want narms and legss, both of em in some cases . To effect simple maintainence and or repair/replacement of me front forks innards etc. Was wondering if any of our lot knew enough about 1981 XV 1000 Yamaha's to know what to do re repair or replacement of the front forks. Apparently parts are hard to come by so was thinking. Replacement! ah but with what, how does one make new ones fit and add all the little bits back onto them without lotsa superglue and bird shit welding. Would appreciate some names of those who may know or who were able to effect repairs or modifications. Cheers folks. First bit of new chrome back in the garage, new rear indicators on the bench. Pack rack,Stainless steel, made and ready to bolt onto Newly chromed complete with original lock box(Yah!) rear tail assembly. New stainless steel pannier brackets being made up as I type. Forward foot rest bar being considered, naturally stainless. Paint under way, theres chalk on the tank , side covers and panniers. Engine still being considered. IE. complete strip down , or simple heads and barrels off, hone, rings, port polish, bling the barrels and retrun to crankcase. Wheels damn the bloody things aye cmoore, but nevertheless they'll be great to look at when completed. Many thanks to cmoore for the bits to keep me mobile, been great getting so much doen with bike intact, but soon she'll have to come off the road. Keep em shiny side up compardres.
Giday Caseye. How many kms has the bike done? You may be able to rebuild yours if the k's aren't too high. You're right about the cost being prohibitive though. Just had a look at some new outer tubes for your model at US$400 each. I rebuilt my old GS850 shocks with new seals and a set of progressive springs. Increased the preload spacer length and all works great. It would pay you to have yours stripped before making any hasty decisions. You may only need some new seals and progressive springs too.
http://www.motorcycle-parts.com.au/Std_Fork_Tubes.htm (try this, wont open on my PC, did find the same list at stainforths) http://www.staniforths.co.uk/stan_catalogue.htm http://www.mikesxs.net/products-19.html#products http://www.mikesxs.net/products-18.html#products What diameter arer your forks, if they are 35mm you maybe able to get fork tubes off mikesxs. they have longer fork tubes for chopper/custom bikes. they have emultors and springs too I am getting some standard XS tubes to fit the XJ front end for my LC, between checking out the lenghts and yamaha part nunbers off the torazzi list i found that the XS forks are the same part number as SR500 and they are only 2mm different that the XJ550, apart that XS has screw in bungs at the top instead of push in plugs with circlips. Will get/make some plugs and put preload adjusters in them like i have an my LC You could PM Robert Taylor at CKT once you have done some reasearch on what's what
Not for a 1000 but XV750h , bought some gear of these people recently, might be worth contacting them http://www.yamahaoftroy.com/fiche_se...981&fveh=20008
I just did the Darmah ones, new springs and seals. main thing imho is the condition of the chrome. If the chrome is good I'd just do the seals, a good clean and reassemble. Bring them over and we can do it here if you like....I can't imagine they are much different.
http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/ http://www.fastfromthepast.com both these places are likely to have the fork tubes that you need (and not too expensive). likely they are shared between severyl yammy models so if your is not listed give them a call. that is if you need the new tubes at all (depends if there's any pitting/rust on the area that slides past the seals. at the risk of starting a religious debate here, i think you do not want to polish the intake ports as that may compromise performance at the bottom / midrange (for a street motor) due to poorer atomisation of fuel in the air mechanics charge rediculous money just to take the forks apart and put them back together (admitedly, it CAN be time consuming) so best take up volty's offer, or bring them over and we'll have you sorted. if the internals are worn a bit (like mine are) a heavier oil does wonders. i run 20w with progressive springs and am VERY happy with the setup.
Old bikes are sort of religion aren't they Psy? lol
Caseye...remember that the XV1000 did not change for many years....so the XV920 and other models right up to the mid 90's had the same (well almost) components...including no doubt the forks. also try the guy at motorcycle graveyard...he has a heap of XV1000 parts left....he used to advertise on trademe
Cheers you bunch a hairy assed BFTP'ers. I've got some home work to do now, Msany thanks everyone, I will start looking now.
