I decided not to go for it.I enjoyed getting back to the old school fixing things, but it was a bit much like working in a wreckers yard...which is what it was.I'm really thankful for the opportunity to give it a try, without burning my bridges,or them having to get rid of me...it's hard to fire someone in this day and age.

I think it drives home the fact that your job should never be doing what you love...a job is a job, passions are for enjoying.

Possibly a wise move Motu. When I worked for Sawyer Honda in the distant past, it removed all the passion in bikes.

So does that mean the Pajero gets a reprieve, or does it's neck remain firmly on the chopping block?

No,it's sold...or it went on TradeMe last night,it should be picked up in a couple of days.I'm sad to let it go (sounds like being told you're fired),it's been a good truck for me,done lots of work...and I've done a lot of work on it too.I don't think I'll ever own a car again that I put that much work into, probably the last engine I will fully reco to that level. Now I will probably get a bad rep on TM for a vehicle that blows up the day after.

Most people hate their jobs, get very little satisfaction from doing it too. We spend so much of our time at work that to be able to enjoy what you do does counter somewhat things like commuting etc.

You love those cars, you like to do a good job, and do it properly. Working for people who care about their cars is awesome. What your doing now is bread and butter, to a buget, mundane and beneath you (can I get a WOF for my ute next Friday please? we can do lunch)
A 60min commute will go down to 50mins on a bike with some practice without being naughty, might I suggest a K75 with luggage, heated grips and a full fairing?

I was eyeing up a K75 with all the fruit on TM as a good commuter at the time.Actually, the working conditions weren't up to my standards - they didn't even have a partswasher.More on the side of car wrecker than specialist Mercedes workshop. Not to say he isn't a skilful and knowledgeable guy,but my standards are higher and want to be proud of what I turn out. What I'm doing now is bread and water (no butter) boring and certainly beneath me...but is what I needed at the time.Last week was a message from me to myself that I'm looking for better.I haven't told them at work what I did for that week, but I'll let it slip at some stage.

I'm not in charge of the bookings, but ring and ask for a 1.00pm appointment,we'll have lunch, come back and do your WoF.

Sorry Motu, for some reason the second page did not show up when I replied so I never saw you had given it the flick.

    but no partswasher! Feckin' heck!
The garage I first worked in had no partswasher..oh hang on, that was my first task. They had lots of customers with classic cars who never asked questions like "How long will it last if I don't get it fixed?"
I wonder if places like that still exist? If you can sacrifice a bit of commuting to the right place then your search area is quite wide to find one. I bet there is a place, but they probably don't even advertise- or need to.

Will make the booking for next Fri - gives me time to give it the 6 monthly check over

Funny how stuff always goes bang in the middle of the night.....
....still can't be any worse than working on London Underground from 1-5 in the morning cleaning out condensers and dodging the rats....
