Does anyone know where I could lay my hands on the electric charging coils from a pre-unit 650 Bonneville.

I was told they would be alternator but my thinking is they would pre-date alternator and would be more likely to be a generator.

Charging coils would be in an alternator stator - have you seen what it is you want? The generator is a separate unit gear driven on the front of the engine, the alternator is directly driven from the left crank end and is inside the primary case.

The first Alt twin was in '53,with the stator in the outer primary case - you'd be hard pressed to find one of those these days.Swingarm came in '54,and stator was then on the inner case.T100,T110 always had a mag and generator, the first Bonnie did too,but went to an alt for the duplex frame.

My t110 is the Lucas dynamo buts thats going in the bin and getting an Alton alternator instead...and the magnetos going to be electronic ignition.....think the concours judges will notice...

John - I don't have one yet, but I do have an opportunity to be involved with a project bringing a very special bike back to the race track. The first steps in the project are to get the bike charging and the person who has built the bike (to the most amazing concours condition) is stuck at that part. We need to find the thing, whatever that is and wherever it is, that will do the job. There is a possibility of going to a total loss system but the owner, who has spent 20 years building the bike, is keen to have it "whole" which is something I can understand. He didn't get to where he is by taking shortcuts, as people will (hopefully) see if we can get this one important step sorted.

I can't imagine they are that hard to get, just about all parts for 50's Triumphs are available, locally try Cycle Torque, British Spares, Bob Nesbit, internationally, Tri Supply, ebay.
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 59 T110....after a 17 year pause.....

Surely, if it is a Bonnie or T110, preunit will be magneto ignition? So, on a race bike, why is there any need for an alternator? The racing Triumphs didn't have them (the ISDN and such like were different, because they needed headlamps). Is he planning to fit headlamps? If not , there is nothing for an alternator to do.

Lucas alternators rotors and stators are available on Trademe almost always.
