UMMMMM !!! Wasn't there a clutch hub puller in that box of tricks. Round tube sort of thing , thread on the outside at one end & a bolt through the middle. If my remember serves me right , nuts holding timing gears are reverse thread. You DEFINITELY have the puller for the gear on the end of the crank. I have an engine stand that I forgot to bring , can drop it off Monday morning , but it will be sparrows fart. Bodge away Maestro.
Yes, but need to get other bit off to get to it. Engine stand I've got a pre unit one but it don't fit yer fancy late model stuff.
There is a rooted looking US style tank on TM....is that considered 'scope creep" http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=694569320 from my previous BSA OIF days, there are two US tanks, the small one and the smaller one.
They have filled in the centre mounting hole & tacked shit onto the front of the tank. Or it's for an earlier model
2 mounts at the front and a single at the rear....dunno why it would have a hole in the middle. Definitely not OIF. The clutch centre should just fall off, puller is only needed for the bit held on by the taper.
First light to fall on timing gears since 1972. Look Ma no case screws!!!?? Crank out, bearings good. A productive afternoon at Shedroom Heights saw the valve guides sleeved, the sparkplugs snapped off...and drilled out to about 1mm wall left. Got a file and made the wall a bit thinner then used special tool and a hammer.... ran a tap thru the hole and its 'usable' but not that wonderful, still good effort. Gearbox looks ok at first glance The Friggin sludge trap fecked my impact driver..... even with heat the cold chisel struggled......then You Tubed it. Got the copper spanners out and welded on a METRIC Nut and sure enough it came out. was pretty sludgy. Munted it getting it out. The sump plug refused to budge, time for a beer. Quite a successful play in the shed.
Looking good. Just as well you did strip it by the looks of the sludge trap. Pretty archaic oil filtration on these things.
Sludge is caused by cold running...and the crap oil they had back then. Triumph finally went to big dogs with the 5 speed, the 4 speed had lots of small dogs, and they were shitty shifting. In a 1/2in drive socket set there was always a draglink adjuster, like a screwdriver - I used to grind them to suit and use that to get the sludge trap out. I don't think they supply them in socket sets anymore. That's a heavy crank - they got lighter and lighter and then heavier and heavier.
Bought a new impact driver, heated up the case and smacked it round a bit. Job Done. Bigs ends are like new, crankcase was 1/2 full of oil and mains look like new, new enough looking that I don't think me replacing them is adding value. Shedy motor is looking very promising.
