Those XL500s are magic. I dug trenches all over Woodhill forest for years with mine. I could have leased it to Telecom for trench digging. Then I won a brand new XR250 from Honda NZ so changed to that.

hey diggers, yep i put a bid on that fj, as usual just to see where the reserve would crop up hehe, would be a good buy at 2.5k..a nice comfy tourer!
i just got the xl500s off the transprter today from nelson, gave it a few boots and it started, engine nice and tight and sound (16,000kms) just needs
a repaint in tahitian red (its a factory white one)

I fronted up to the Wild Pine 2 day ride at Woodhill. They drew my name from a hat and gave me a T shirt and oil pack. At the prize giving they drew my name from the hat again and gave me a brand new XR250L. I sold the 500 ( which I had rebuilt and sprayed in Monza red) and used the 250 for 10 years and thousands of kms of only trail riding. Brilliant. I had paid $1000 for the BMW in 1979 ( it has now done 168,000 miles) and got $3500 for the Honda after my knees had cried "enough". So I bought the MZ 660 Skorpion for $2500 with 19,000 km on the clock. That means my investment in 2 totally useable and different bikes is zero. Canny investments and cheap hobby. In a back issue of Kiwi Rider there is a photo of me kissing the General manager of Honda NZ on both cheeks. He looks startled. Bikes for free. Had to spend a fortune on the chicks.

That's a very frugal bike ownership story Unna, I bet the rest of us wish we could have done something similar!
Flash, there are a few FJs around at the moment for a reasonable price. I'm wondering if the sports/tourer CBR is a bit too sporty and not enough tourer for me, but I'll ride it for a bit yet and see.
That 500 single easy to start?

After doing extensive work on the engine of mine it had a compression that would make a diesel green with envy. It was an easy starter but I'm glad I'm 6'2". The engine is unburstable and unstoppable. I would love another but one big single in the workshop is enough.

unna,i remember that article in kiwirider when you won that...sooon as you said the wild pine a remembered right away...good score!! diggers, my 500 started quite easily, half a dozen kicks but i was getting the hang of the way the decomp (auto only) engages etc, although its a pumper carb it seems to start best with a small crack of the throttle.
