No need to buy or display parking ticket. Few things in life are free but bike parking is one of them *touch wood*

Oh wow really, what a bonus!

I read somewhere that as long as you can get past the arm barrier you can park in car parks for free? Is this true?

This is not likely to be free for much longer. I see AKCC are looking at new technology to enable m/bikes to use pay parking. New parking meters where you enter your regno in before paying.

Also the Wellington parking building operators are slowly removing free motorbike spaces from their buildings.

More or less correct, as long as you don't take up any parks, AKA park in an out of the way corner, or a non-specified park. Some (not all) parking buildings have designated bike parks, but that's a bit of a rarity.
Whereabouts in town are you working?

Thanks Maggot for clearing that up.

I will be based on Vincent street, know of any sneaky parks around there?

Tournament parking does not however do free parking for bikes and expects you to pay the full amount (even though we don't take up the full space pisses me off) btw

Depending on what end of Vincent street you are working at, there are some sneaky motorbike parks behind the old Auckalnd Regional Council building (use to be the Vodafone building). Free parking, heaps of spaces, a few undercover if you get there early and monitored by camera (tracking theives). The Civic will also be a good option, just park next to other bikes (thats what i did the other week as it was my first time in there). Probably a few more sneaky parks on Vincent St, like out the front of the central police station There are also a few in the YMCA car park too

The problem with them is that (other than the one by the Central public library) there is no things to chain your bike to (cue van-equipped bike thief) and that most of them are so small they're always full.

    Any ideas?

looks like they are really trying to get rid of us. Thought it was bad enough when they got rid of most of the parking on Symonds street

Thank the Wellingtonians who elected a greenie to mayoral role and gave the parking businesses an idea.

It's sad when the society ends up seeing another person as just another cash cow.

This could be superceded soon, Palmerston North (the world leader that we are) are trialling a new remote monitoring system, which if successful will likely be taken on by other cities. Basically there is a little disc in each park which senses when a vehicle is above it cos it blocks the light. So the wardens know exactly which spaces are in use but not paid for, unless of course a smaller vehicle was using one but not covering the sensor But it sounds like they half-assed the payment system interface and the project might go belly-up because of it.

I wouldn't trust it. Car parks are provided to make money and the barriers force vehicles to pay to exit. Some car park owners may well allow motorbikes to use the odd shaped space at no charge, but you'd need to check it out first. You'd probably get away with it in an unmanned car park, but you'd get a funny look from the bloke in the box when you try and squeeze between him and the barrier when he expects his 50c. Or $25 seeing as you are in Auckland.
