If you have the electronic grips control, it will turn itself off very quickly after you shut the bike down.
I didn't use the controller - I just wired mine directly to the headlamp relay. Lights and grips come on with engine start. Works great. I have a connector up front (soon to be replaced by a switch) where I can shut them down if I want.
