Bar-end weights?

I have finally fitted the Oxford Heated Grips to the SVS...not that hard, but a couple of issues have arisen with the bar end weights...

1. Clutch side end weight doesn't want to tighten up...I think the rubber doover at the inner end is just rotating inside the tube...any ideas for a fix?

2. The throttle side end weight does up just fine...but if I tweak it up tight, the throttle movement is compromised - the spring loading will not close the throttle on its own any more. I haven't quite figured out why this is happening yet...so I have had to slacken off the screw holding the weight...to a point where it might well fall off one day...curses!

Incidentally, I initially (reluctantly) wired the grips directly to the battery as recommended by Oxford. But I discovered a cool little idea via another website http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/relay.php for setting up a bunch of auxiliary circuits via a relay which is switched through the ignition...have had to use a little KI to cover for the fact that nobody knows what some of the bits are...like a "six post position jumper"...but 'tis simple enough and hides under the seat so nobody will see my bodgie handiwork...

cut the ends of the grips like 3-5 mm

Yep, the bolts may be a little too long and can easily be sortened.

When I had a problem with my bar end weight not being straight (after my bin) and was touching the throttle. I found that there was an adjuster to allow me to slide the throttle twist a few mm away. I am sure you will have the same adjustment as you really do need these to be tight.

The relay sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the link.

You might have to take even more off, depending on how long your original grips are. I just kept clipping rubber off until I could do both weights up without fouling the throttle.

Did you clip from the inner end or the outer end?
I took the little sticky-out bit off already - not enough yet though...I need a day when I am not in a hurry to do something else so's I have the time to put into tidying all the loose ends up and generally getting the job completed properly. Have yet to fit the relay idea as well.

I clipped from the outside only, didn't want to risk messing with the wiring coming out from the inside.

The original Scorpio grips were about 5mm shorter than the hot grips, even after trimming the little 'sticky-out bit' off, so I've had to take quite a lot off them. On the throttle side I've taken off all the rubber from where the little 'bump' on the outside of the grip used to be. (Does that make sense?) It was possibly more than I really needed to remove, but it looked really funny with only part of the 'bump' left.

Hmm, this reminds me, I really need to tidy the grips up a little, I basically cut them until they worked then have ignored them since.

Rattle gun. Carefully! Drop that air pressure back a bit, and be ready to kill it quick.

If you have the electronic grips control, it will turn itself off very quickly after you shut the bike down.

I didn't use the controller - I just wired mine directly to the headlamp relay. Lights and grips come on with engine start. Works great. I have a connector up front (soon to be replaced by a switch) where I can shut them down if I want.

Just fitted heated grips too. One of my bar end weights wouldn't tighten and I wasn't sure what I was dealing with. Mine has, in the following order, weight, washer, two metal spacers, rubber expander then a nut, the nut had come off. Made up a bit of number 8 wire with a small hook at the end, poked it through the rubber expander and pulled it out, reassembled and hey presto, fixed. I also have a bit of trouble with the throttle not snapping back, I have used an extra spacer on that end, still not the same as before but I'm looking forward to warm hands.

Try a spring washer. That will space the weight out to clear the throttle, plus put tension on the bolt so it shouldn't vibrate loose.
