i learned to ride on a mx track. not just any mx track it was kimmys the most bumpy spot on earth. my riding progressed alot quicker than that of my mates who didnt ride mx tracks. i just rolled over all the jumps to start with, then when i got more confident i cleared one jump the two then the rest.
heres a link for kimmys. its all up to you though. if it was me id be getting a mx bike.

the fact that it's a trail bike won't cause damage at your level. It's more likely to cause damage due to it being an old dunger. But by the time you have the nut's to jump table tops you'll be hankerin for somethin better/newer than an XR200... i'm not dissing this bike tho as i recon it's a much better starting bike than a 125.

My first bike was an XL200, she was phat... i still had it a couple years ago sitting at my parents house but they kept telling me to get rid of it and i kept ignoring them so they sold it for $20 dollars at a garage sale... that was the fucking sale of the century mate... you shoulda been there to reap the benefits... i was furious.

You'd find an oldie that runs for a few hundred dollars... that's the route i'd be taking if i were in your position... you're more likely to find one through word of mouth than trade me... talk to some farmers etc, or get your local trading post/newspaper

    heres what you should do,

get a xr250 and gear, ride it for about a year going around trails ect and whille you doing that save for a better bike and after a year sell the xr250 and buy a 250 mx'er
Sounds like a plan mate =) Depending on what I can afford / find it will be either a XR200 or XR250

    Word of mouth eh...?

You reckon I'd find a seller on here?

    Far out! $20. Harsh!

I'm really looking forward to this, just need to convince my parents to buy me one. They were really keen a week ago...

xrs are bloody heavy. If your planning on jumping, forget it. They just arnt made for it. I know, iv killed a few similar bikes back in the day. But if you want a reliable TRAIL bike, then they are sweet.

So basically, are you the type of guy who trys to push limits and would be getting airborn very soon? - 125

Or the type thats content putting around trails and paddoks at your own speed, just for a bit of fun?

You must have had a shit 125 DELLORTO. Iv had one and know a few people with them and none of us ever had problems.

nice flyingcr. seen that one on trademe. looks pretty clean.

I'm pretty nervous when it comes to jumping, been jumping around on my friends off road scooter.

Trails and Paddocks will be fine enough for me (for now =))

All very well and good, but the guys on a VERY limited budget, about $900 well i presume thats his budget so i dont think you will find a kdx anything for that sort of money or anysort of mx bike worth a shit, so hes probably best to stick with something like a xr200 or cheap trail bike to start...remember this guy hasnt riden before

I think what you need to do is shoot out to thunder x bike park and rent a bike of theirs to see if you enjoy id. once you've got the hang of clutch etc on them go and try a couple of bikes *(XR250 and a KDX200) then make a desicion for yourself. Personally I started on a really old XR100 when I was real young, moved up to an XR200 then didn't ride for like 12yrs. Bought a CRF250 which i rode for a year, went CR250 which i'm riding now and love. Start wit something with a little less horsepower that isn't going to scare you shitless but something you can grow into over the next year or so then look at something a lil bigger and quicker if you feel the need to.

I would strongly recommend staying away from test riding the guys 250 two strokes on here as I know how fast they are and it could be enough to scare you off bike all together.

Take baby steps and move into it in your own time and you will have the time of your life and meet some great people riding too.

    Thanks Pierce =)

I'm going to get a budget out of my parents, find an XR200/250 and some safety gear. Then I'll learn to ride in my own time.

Good to hear mate, I'd hate to have to travel for a couple of hours to get to the nearest track...

I'm looking forward to giving it a start!
