    You're a genius!

Milking job... I may be able to get a job at the farm in town I wanna practice.

I want to get a NEW helmet, it's my head... Very important to me =). Knee brace, if I fall and break my knee, I will wish I had bought one.

I don't think I will need the pants and shirt too much. But what about roost flying into me?

just make sure your in front of everyone :P

your not gonna jump straight into racing so roost is not gonna be an issue straight away. Its gonna take a while seeing as youve never ridden before.

As for to late to be good... rubbish. Joel Smets started riding at 18

The milking jobs are good eh... theres allways heaps of farmers wanting cheap relief milking... and as long as your willing to get up a bit earlier it makes great money... and the best part is, when you do get a bike you just milk the mornings, giving you the rest of the day to ride!

MMMM Are you talking knee brace or knee pads .. unless you have a specific knee problem i would just stick with a pair of knee pads for starters, knee braces are very expensive.. we usually dont wear any unless its very dry and rocky or are carrying injuries
if you think life is 2 short , get a taller one

I was talking knee brace, but I still don't know what I do and don't need.

My Dad has given me what I think is the headshake. Maybe they will buy me the bike, and I'll pay for everything else...

My Maintenance list so far is:
    • Fuel
    • Two Stroke Oil
    • Transmission Oil
    • Air Filters
    • Top End Kits

What else? I want to be able to price everything up before I start, that way I can see how much it's going to cost.

I'd love to give someone else's bike a go, does anyone have a 125 of some style, good for learners?

For my first bike, how does a YZ125 sound?

125's have no low end power, they are all or nothing type bikes. To get them to go anywhere you have to clutch them all the time and keep them screaming. You cant putt around on them. But you should be sweet if you get a newer model

    YZ 125 2001?

A different kind of bike to start with?

I just really like the look of the YZs, great bikes!

i think you should be fine with a 2001 if its in not too bad condition. i had a 2001 CR250 which was a real reliable bike.

Being a 15 year old, how is a 125cc for starters? Do you need height and weight to figure anything out?

    I found a damned good condition 2001 YZ125 on trademe for $1500

in my opinion i think its better to start on a bigger bike especially if your on a tight budget. my first bike was a 1993 cr250 when i was 16 and since then ive only ridden 250's and higher, its easier to go slow on a bigger bike and grow into it rather than grow out of a smaller bike and end up having to replace it with something bigger. but a 125 should last you a few years. are you able to post a link to the trademe auction??

depends if your racing or just a weekend rider.

    my costs per month:

    pre-mix oil $35
    fuel for bike $50-60
    gear box oil $35
entry fee for rides and bike parks $100-$140
    airfilter oil $8
i use the best oils which is why they are so expensive, it pays to use a good quality synthetic pre-mix oil.

general maintenance like topends, wheel bearings, swingarm bearing, steering head bearings etc.. is a bit harder to price.

EDIT: those prices were for me riding every weekend in a month.

So, say I wanted to be a weekend rider, (and maybe some week days in the holidays), how often would I need to replace those other parts? Bearings, top ends, etc... because $280 something a month is defiantly do-able.

usually ill pull my bike down every 6 months and check and grease all the bearings, you should get quite a while out of your wheel bearings and steering head bearings as long as your carefull with the way you wash your bike (like not pointing the waterblaster directly at the seals etc..)and keep them greased. as for top ends im not sure about the 125's but i did a topend on my CR250 every 50-70 hours of riding time. a motominder is a good way to keep track of hours or runtime. most of them are cheap too.

After a bit more research/reading peoples replies. I have decided to try out Trail Biking first.

I just hope I can go fast, and go over some jumps =)

I will move onto motocross later, maybe.

Crikey glad I live in the south $100 - $140 for a bike park LMFAO

We have heaps of free riding areas 10 mins from Christchurch.

Riding can cost you as much or as little as you like. The organised trail rides
are around $30 to $40 here in Canterbury and will probably do one some day but mates and I have a hell of a lot of fun down at the Waimak tracks the council have built, Mc Cleans Island etc.

Cut your teeth with trail riding and build up your protection gear for motocross at the same time.

The YZ on traders at $1500 is the starting bid, like others have said a 250 be the gooooooo, top end power band on 125 less controllable for a beginner than 250 over rev range.

If you can pick up an old XL or XR to learn the ropes you will be able to sell it very easy, four strokes great bikes to learn to ride on ...... control !

And yep as wisely said when you go to buy your 2 stroke check out the swing arm bearing, wheel bearing, brake pads and discs, head bearing etc etc etc etc _ I learnt the hard way buying the 500 off trade me, the advert
seemed genuine and the guy selling it when he was on the phone ....... blown crank seals, no back brakes, rusted out swing arm bearing, worn brake discs ........ bike parts are expensive and before you know it your 15 year old has cost you as much as a new one - "I kid you not"
