    Post Im gonna get this goddam clutch done

    Have just opened up clutch (finally..) to find plates not too bad.
    I figure that the previous owner chucked a fuel additive in , so am going to wash in petrol and chuck back in....
    but since i have em out, and i am unsure as to why they are slipping, i figure i better check the plates and springs with a micrometer.
    So just wondering if anyone has the specs of clutchplate thickness and uncompressed clutch spring lenghts - For a ZXR400SP(H).
    Will have to talk nicely to the AUT lectures to see if i can use their measuring equipment.
    Will just download as much stuff as i can find on zxr400.co.uk to see if its there.
    but if anyone has em, if they could post em here, pm me, or email me....that would be bloody marvelous.

    if its slipping

    if its slipping the fibre plates are probably too thin, replace them and the steels too, i tryed to cheat once and just do the fibres but alas the steels were done too. while your there get heavier pressure plate springs.

    yeah i had a similar problem with my zxr400


    replace the fibre plate,($99 from memory) bead blast the steels($20 from a powder coater) and buy some premier springs, they are 30% heavier than standard(cant remember how much they cost.............if the previous owner has added some additive, you should drain the oils chuck in some cheap bike mineral oil, run it for a few mins and drop the oil again, then chuck in some goodstuff(formulated for wet clutches) but then from memory if your bike is a (SPH) it should have a dry clutch(mine did) wot year is it??

    its a 89'
    gots some specs for clutch plate thickness - so will micro them up soon (i currently use 19 hours in every day - horray for V) to see if they are thick enough (allthough they look pretty good).
    where can i get a good cheap (really cheap) bike oil to do a flush with????
    I think the clutch only sits in about 0.5-1L of oil so it is semi dry.

    Yeah make sure you check the springs while you are at it. My clutch was slipping at high revs. Increasing the tension can be done by either buying new springs or do what I did and just put some washers in to act as spacers. Works great now.

    For what it is worth my TL was slipping like a drunken bum meandering down a slippery grassy hill a while ago.

    I just changed the clutch springs for heavy duty ones. Took about 5min all up! And now she's like new. Don't know if the same will apply to you but perhaps worth a try. CLutch springs are pretty cheap...$20 for a set of 6 springs or something.

    well looks like i have everything up to (actually above), specs from factory - so its not the plates or the springs that are the prob.
    Have borrowed some high deteregent grade oil, and and after i have given everything a good soak/wash in some meths im gonna chuck it all back together and give the system a good flush. Then will do a full oil change and chuck some good quality motorbike oil in there and see where that gets me.
