I went back and re-read your post and I see that I missed the point. I agree the G series as you mention seem to have been a very poor seller in NZ too. I've seen two in the flesh but a lot more of the old F650GS's and F650GSD.
Interesting that the video in the link suggest that the new F600GS twin is also a bit of a sales flop in that they are too pricey and BMW believes there value in bring back the old F650GS as the new G650GS. We spent a week and a bit in Italy back in 07 and excluding scooters the F650GS would have been the most common bike we saw. There were a a few Italian built TTR600's, a few Tranny's, bugger all road bikes and even less of anything else. Seems BMW might have been a bit ambitious with the F650GS and thrown out a good thing and now they are realising it.
