Just been reading back thru this thread. It used to be quite informative & people were doing things to their bikes. Have we all reached that state of KLR Nirvana where they have attained a higher state & no longer require wokring on.

Like Harleys, KLRs are never finished. There is always another farkle.

I'm currently looking for replacement fairing and side covers. Several major offs have left is looking very second hand. Don't appear to be anyone in the owrld making aftermarket plastics for the 08+ models. Tried contacting Hayes (the diesel KLR people) as the bikes they advertise are based on 08+ but do not use the fairing of side covers. Never heard anything back.

I'd have a go at making moulds if i had a set of undamaged items. Could corner the world market

    spoil sport

funny how there are several well defined marque stereotypes to poke fun at....

BMW oil head riders - boring prestige seekers
BMW air head riders - fanatic sub species - more interested in the latest bean can mod than riding
KLR riders - tight arse, middle aged and slow
KTM riders - egotistical meat beaters but unfortunately often fast
DR riders - gay and boring (that's a difficult combo to master - but they do it well)

    did I miss offending anyone?

says he who is contemplating deserting his roots

plenty of mods still to do - put on rox risers and bark busters and move sceen/fairing forward 50mm, get seat recovered (torn) and repadded. If money was no object then new forks, 705+port+fcr )

Self explanatory really. The Airhead is a much better bike for that trip
(assuming its guts stay on the inside)
IT'S JUST BETTER WHEN THERE'S TWINS INVOLVED..

clearly in Padmei case it wasn't

I'm not questioning the relative merits of the bikes - they are very close in many areas - more the relative reliability based on apparent condition - did I put that politely enough?.

shouldn't you be painting the house?

will you be done by the weekend of 5th/6th Feb?

    3 bearings????
Where does the 3rd one go?

I want to get some from Nelson tomm or Fri so I can do a ride in the weekend. I'll take the wheel off tonite.

I tossed up taking both bikes & want to make sure the KLR's clutch is ok before taking it away for long rides. Also I hadn't replaced the rear bearings.
I thought I better bite the bullet & take the BMW for a decent ride otherwise it'll sit in the garage looking cool but being unused.
In hindsight although the BMW spewed out it's oil I'm glad I took it otherwise i'd havedone the challenge part which everyone 'said' they enjoyed however Imayhave spat the dummy & rooted my back having to pick it up all the time.

two in the wheel and one in the cush drive. The cush drive bearing takes a beating and doesn't last anywhere as long as the 2 wheel bearings.

Ask woody - he's an expert cush drive bearing rooter

How do you know when it's rooted? Just took the wheel off & all seem pretty ok. I'll take it to my bike shop & get them to check them all.

Does it feel "notchy" at all when you turn it ? or sound "rumbly". If so then it's roooted
How many k's have you done ? the bearings don't last forever. While your there.... see if you can get new seals aswell, pays to do the lot if you can, IMHO
