In life as in dance Grace glides on blistered feet
Fixed. (My ride on Sat was enough to convince me that to keep myspinesemi vertical I need a liter bike.)
Well funnily enough that's something I've been thinking of since looking at the pics of Day 2
I'm wondering if this years DB was an adv ride or a trail ride with road sections? No negative connotations infered so roll down your shirt sleeves![]()
The road sections were great & easy however on most of the trails 'normal' DS adv bikes (ie 650ish) struggled.
Hmmm...
BTW KLRs still rule if you can only have one bike!!!

Yup the DB was more technical and traily which is a good thing IMHO.
The day 1 challenge section wasn't necessarily a struggle for the bikes, but more so the riders as it was quite physical and sustained. I think even on a DRZ you would have come down thinking you had been in your first weights session of the year.
You would have got over on Schmidt, look what Shrek, Underground and the GS8hundy boys did.
BTW how much does Schmidt weigh?
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

GS8hundy boy = Mountie on KB. It was pretty tiring but if you took your time it shouldn't have been that bad. Riding rocks like that just needs a little bit of momentum (not speed) and good balance. I find standing helps immensely with the balance. I rode the whole of the Lammerlaw standing during the Dusty and most of the Awakino Challenge standing during the pre ride.

Marks, I see you took your mirrors off. Good thinking, it sure is nice and low and overgrown. Is the track an 'out and back'? Or can you get through to another road somewhere further down Akatarawa? I see there are tracks north to Ngatiawa but they look like walking tracks only? Just looking from my Topo maps here.
Nice blat though, I bet it would be a good challenge in the thick of winter...
Odlins Rd is the perfect balance of nasty and fun.
The track is about 20km long and is an in-out job. Gets about halfway to Otaki Forks. The track is fine in winter as its very stony with little clay. The river at the end gets too nasty to cross though.
I nearly always take my mirrors off as I'm paranoid about breaking the clutch or brake perth. and as I dumped the bike twice on that ride it was just as well I did
Hi All,
Having a good year work wise and with the Kiwi-US exchange rate being good at present, I'm about to embark on a WHOLE lot of farkling on the trusty KLR
( Awaiting another 4 parcels to arrive from the states before I post photos of all the 'bits' pre-farkling......... )
Anyway, I know and understand what the PCV mod is, the problem is I have no idea where to source one of the actual PCV valves to splice into the tube
I figured that surely one of you that haunts this space and/or ADVrider might know where I can find a source of this elusive valve
Thanks in advance, Cheers Stu![]()
My KLR thinks it's a Hyundai - running happily at the red-line hour after hour.....
I used one from a v6 Commodore - just walked around Pick-a-Part looking at likely candidates. Most PCVs are right-angled and fit into rubber grommets in the rocker/cam cover so not what I had in mind - the Commodore one screws into the inlet manifold and has a hose which goes to the cam cover. I got a bunch of them and after washing them all out with petrol, used the best one (given a blow / suck test)
On reflection, having the valve inserted into the airbox is not goign to be as successful as if it went to the inlet manifold, if only because there isn't going to be any vacuum in the airbox (it's open to the atmosphere). In the car application it's going to have high vacuum on one side.
Also note the breather hole spigot into the airbox is about 25mm dia outside, but the hole itself is more like 6mm diameter. Removing the airbox to open this hole up is quite a mission. Unless there is a better way I had to remove the subframe, with all that that entails.
However I believe that either the valve or opening up the breather hole did help.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

G'day
Been trying to build these myself for ages - but did all the price comparisons and stuff and was cheaper to get them built for me- Engineers over the road from work, told them what I wanted - showed them a few piccies and they wipped these up in a couple of hours - rang me for input before welding
- all good!
Will use them as is for a while and then go back for adjustments (if required) - but they're looking good at the moment and hug (5mm off) the plastics so can stay on full time. Only thing so far is that I will have to remove one to get to the air filter (two bolts on the passenger footpeg loosen the third and then twist will do it)
