Just like eating a hot pie, if it falls on your lap...

So many things that cause crashes and they are targeting one form. People should be fined for dangerous/careless driving if they are driving in that manner.

Dunno how they'll pick up on the people texting anyway, I usually hold the phone down by my lap.

How about those GPS systems? People program them while driving and fiddle around with it, meaning eyes completely off the road... Dodgy!

Handsfree talking on the phone is not a problem (and just talking on a normal cellphone when driving an automatic is the same) - texting on the other hand is asking for trouble.

The problem with texting is that you are diverting the most important sense - sight - from where it should be when you are driving: on the road ahead and your mirrors. Since you can never prevent people from daydreaming and thinking about random stuff when driving anyway, banning talking on the phone makes no sense.

It's very easy to notice if the person behind you haven't got their eyes on the road in front of them. If they tailgate as well I like to give them a bit of a surprise by pushing the brake just enough to put on the brake lights.

If you are going to text, at least hold the phone up in front of you so your gaze is not that far diverted from where it should be... idiot (if you text at anytime when you are moving)!

Personally i think its a bandaid fix to ban using them... better idea would of course be to overhaul driver training (but they're never going to get around to that)

What? So I wouldn't be allowed to eat my pie and fish'n chips while driving?

    Sod that.

Yeah, I second that, the flip-front would have been a complete waste of money otherwise...

The thing is, even my 14yr old sister can text without looking at the phone whatsoever. Depending on the person, I can choose a number, start a text, write it all out, send it, and put it back in my pocket... All without looking down whatsoever.

Mind you, as I said I choose time and place, you wont find my texting in the city or in traffic at speed. I can put the phone down at any time too.

I've seen so many people looking at their mapbook whilst driving, in my opinion this is far worse than texting, it requires far more vision attention.

Your opinion isn't fact though, any more than mine is.

You don't need to be looking down to be distracted. It takes quite a lot of brain power to think ahead of the phones' keypad, calculating how many presses etc, and theres no way your mind is on the road at this time.

The main danger I see with you, is that you immediately justify your actions without any reflection. This makes you a dangerous person, and not just when txting, since you are always right. The only way to deal with people who think this way is to punish them.

Well, no, not really. Eventually it becomes totally reflexive, no calculation needed. Any more than you need to calculate weight distribution and momentum vectors when walking . It's all handled at a lower level of the brain, beneath the "thinking" part.

The problem is though, what do you do when they reply? Reality is that mostly txting is like a convo, txt, receive reply, txt back etc.
