    Newbie please help ...

hi ave recently moved to Auckland from Scotland and i am currently living on the north shore, i have decided that i would like a bike for my form of transport, i am due to sit my test next saturday then hopefully gain my learners, which will enable me to go for something upto a 250cc

were do i start bike wise ??? i realy dont know what i am looking for etc i have had a look at some bikes over the last week or so just to get an idea of the different styles of bikes etc and i think i like the cruiser style but also like the dual purpose even though they differ from each other but wont know until i have test driven one "am maybe getting ahead of myself" i have been looking on trade me with my dad at some bike's am around 6ft1 not sure if this makes a difference,

i had found one that i liked the look of again wouldnt know till tested it's made by a company called jincheng in china now i was told to maybe stay clear of imports etc but further investigation into the company and i have found out that aprila are teaming up with them to make a bike, this had made me think maybe there not that bad ??????? the bike has been serviced no bother in auckland as well and you can obtain parts if need be from them direct

    this is the bike http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-225093142.htm

could you please share some knowledge and wisdom with me what i should maybe be looking for i know i am not going to know until i have actualy tested some bikes, whats a good first bike ????????

    thanks for your time

    mc

Being a tall bugger if me i would go for a road legal trail bike, aside from being pretty bulletproof ie when you drop it its easy to fix generally theres the added bonus of being able to muck about off-road a bit,lot to be learned mucking about off road believe me,and all applicable to your road riding. If a purely road going 250 is your thing then pretty hard to go past a Suzuki GN250 for my money.Up to you but from an oldish motorcyclist i feel most guys would do well to have a trail bike when starting out.

Cruisers are low to the ground so that might be annoying since you are kinda tall. Dual purpose bikes tend to be a bit higher off the ground seat wise. That's about all I know

I am sure you will be a great rider of bike but you have to carefully to choose your bike when you go to buy. Normally we would love to a bike which is looking passionate and speedy. So here I think 250 cc is great for you.

In my opinion, you want to get a bike that is feels comfortable to you, rather than necessarily the nicest looking bike.

That link does not work for me. I personally would not buy a chinese made bike off TardMe. I dont know the first thing about them mind you, but I would feel more comfortable knowing my bike was supported by a reputable manufacturer with a dealer network I could call on when my bike needs servicing or something goes wrong with it.

Will this bike be your primary form of transport, or is this a commuter only? Where do you want to be able to go on this bike?

that's not the quickest, nor most reliable, nor most well-known brand...

However, if you're happy with a cruiser and all you want is to get into biking and get your license before going to bigger and better things, then don't see why not... It's cheap enough... You'll probably sell it for the same price you bought it for.

If you rode it for a year and it fell to bits, then you wouldn't lose much sleep over $1500 would you?
