It's the difference between making a $29 sale or building a long-term relationship. Some shops don't understand the difference between the two, nor do they really want to. It's all too hard for them.
It's not that they can't be arsed trying to help a potential customer, it's just that they don't get it generally. The same reason they don't understand why you'd ride 400km to test ride or buy a $25,000 bike that they could sell you when they're less than 20km away.
People generally develop a list of favorite bike shops and a list of "avoids". When I was younger and more impetuous I used to occasionally share my thoughts on this matter. I now realise that that could have been construed as being unfair, so I now reserve my venom for only truly worthy cases.
