im definately going to make a roll chart holder, maybe motorized also with switches on bar :\?, with a backlight, ? is there any specific dimensions anyone can give me to help me out, i guess it depends what you print the roll chart out at?
i have,,,,,, 2 clues out of 100 :P
i'm building a prototype powered roadbook, takes a bit more than you'd thinkmotor and pulley/belts should be here this week, will post some pics when done - not going to be a cheap option ($200ish in parts).

Roll chart is just under 65mm wide. Each cell is just under 25mm deep and you want to be able to see about 3 or 4 at a time plus have space for the rolls of paper. The depth needs to allow for all the paper to be in one roll and the diameter of this depends on what size roller you use. So you need the box to be about 65 wide by 150 long by about a min of about 60 deep internal dimensions.
Make a nice motorised back lit one and you'll probably have a sale here.

Cause it is more traditional, much cheaper (if you do the click clack version) and more challenging to navigate with. Dakar still uses road books (large scale roll charts) so if you want to pretend... A GPS will be much easier to navigate with if you know how to use it. I like a challenging, especially a navigational one and prefer if possible to use the simplest technology I can i.e. maps and roll charts. Then again I'm a bit weird and have been tainted/educated by the best orienteer in the country who just recently placed 12th in the world orienteering champs.

Still got the rollchart holder I made back in 2007 for the original DB1K.

It's still got the 2nd half roll chart in it![]()
My roll chart holder is lying on the side of the route just before Lake Onslow. If I'm lucky I'll pick it up on the run
I'd suggest you don't use alloy to mount it to the bike if fatigues and fractures!

i plan on using gps and roll chart, i actually thought a roll chart might be super simple way to go, only the info you need, and looks quite clear, but i dunno,
ive never used one ;x
There's been a GPS version since 2007![]()
Yep there will be a GPS route file but I'm still working on it. Should be done over the weekend.

Hmmm - it does look simple and cheap. Does that page (the link went to just a single post) have the details of what you used and where you got the stuff? Did you use some rubber or fabric washers where the bolt goes through the side of the container to give you the variable drag? What did the big black turn knobs come off?
Has anyone tried these mounted on top of a tank bag or do they work best mounted on the handlebars?
