It will be a good sociable/scenic ride if that is more your thing rather than the higher kms days (1 or 2 day) of the DB1k itself. Also it will probably be a bit more technically challenging cause conditions will probably be much muddier.

The idea at this stage is to stay overnight in Fairlie on the 23rd of October (we will probably travel down from Chch on Friday evening). Saturday will be through Mackenzies/Haka Pass, Danseys Pass, Old Dunstan 1 Track (eastern portion) to Lawrence area (maybe camp up at Ruralmans?). This will be about a 420km day which will probably take about 10/12 hours at a cruisy pace. We (chch people) need to get this much out of the way on the Sat so we can get back to Chch on the Monday.

Sunday will be Lake Onslow, Hawksburn Rd, Nevis (both ways), Carrictown Track to Cromwell. This will be about 420km and will probably take about 8/10 hours. We will probably find a spot/cabin at the motor camp.

Monday will be Thompson Gorge (rise and shine Rd), Omarama Saddle, Black Forest Station back to Fairlie. This will be about 300km which will take about 7/9 hours. I plan to bail back to Chch for the night (couple of hours up the road).

If you keen stick you name on the calender over here.

    Cheers R
Hi - sounds like plans are well advanced. I don't know if I will be able to ride with you guys for some of this until nearer the time. We are usually getting well into tailing our lambs around then and need to take advantage of child labour at weekend s to get through it!! But we can certainly host some bikers overnight and with any luck I will still ride some of it with you.
There is a big local trail ride around then as well which I usually take my eldest son on but I don't have a date for that yet.
Last weekend we went for a ride over towards Lake Mahingerangi (probably the route you will take to my place - Mark/Cold Comfort wanted to get in some gravel riding on his DR650. I rode my Gas Gas and my boys came on the other trail bikes. It was a beaut warm day and a nice ride. I was pleased to be on the Gas Gas - without any discredit to the other riders the fact is that when you're on a 990/950 Adventure you can just ride these roads so much faster without even trying - so when doing the DB its going to be important to ride with similar machines/riders otherwise the 990/950 rider is going to get bored and frustrated and the 650 rider is going to be struggling and pushing harder than they should on a long ride.

Just found out the local trail ride is on the 31st Oct so it won't clash.
Yes we do lamb later - I get well over 150% lambing without going anywhere near them, but to be able to feed sheep producing that many lambs we have pushed the lambing date back over the years to coincide with stronger grass growth. Doesn't stop us clashing with a few storms though!!
I should be able to get some play time in amoungst the tailing - we'll keep in touch

Forgot there was a calendar event listing for this.
It is listed in post #1 and I quoted above.

I want to ride with the two dayers but also want to laugh with the SBC nutters. Oh decisions decisions. Will be there for the route checking ride anyway, may be easier to decide after that.

I'm all signed up for the one dayer. Just got leave approved
Unfortunately I'm working labour weekend so won't be doing the test run
Also just purchased and fitted 17litre Safari tank from TM so all I need now is cast iron arse!
DRZ400 seat is not the most confortable so guess that's going to be a great motivator to go a little faster.
    Bring it on!

Doh - thanks for highlighting the fact that there is a calendar to sign on with. Take it that you didn't find the ride with us SBC riders too painful the day then

Your a nutter - I can't see how anybody could handle the DB1k 1 dayer on a stock DRZ400 or similar seat! Good news about the tank.

Yep, you know I'm a nutter!
Will definitely have a sheep skin fitted and thinking of cutting up my camping snowfoam for a bit of extra padding.
Think I will be pretty good at riding standing up after this ride!

I did 600 kms in 1 day on an adventure ride earlier this year on my DRZ with
a stock seat and had to ride the last 75 kms standing up i was so sore.

Walked like a Homo for the next 2 days after

    So good luck
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time

Day 1 of the 2 dayer wasn't nice on the bottom but by the end of day 2 it wasn't a problem any more.

I would have preferred doing it on the 650 though.

I've signed on for the 1 day ride assuming I'll have the TS125 up and running by then. If its the DL1000 then I'll do the 2 day ride. Now how's that for irony?

    2 Dayer Digs

The old Moa Creek Pub is booked for the 2 Dayers overnight digs. Great spot & can sleep approx 20, B&B style. Ryan will need to know numbers soon to negotiate a good rate, but it will be cheap.

Pic is when we stopped for refreshments @ the Pub, after crossing very muddy lower Dunstan Trail enroute to Brass Monkey 08.
