Actually the OpenGPS guys did that on purpose. You'll notice it follows the ferry route.

Re Storage- Due to having minimal luggage capacity, and wanting gear before and after the ride, i would prefer to trailer the bike to Fairlie and return. So, is there anywhere "safe" i could park my car and bike trailer for the weekend in Fairlie?? Not being a "hard-arse" the car seat will be a welcome sight after 1000k on a 4x2! Where did you get the seat mod done Nordie btw?

c.h.r.i.s.'s old man may be able to help but this is fairlie so pretty much any place should be safe! You could probably leave your car in the Gladstone pub carpark (round the back). It is large enough we use to park 4 trucks and trailers and a couple of runabouts there when I worked in one of Fulton Hogan's chipsealing gangs.

Andy - I've wimped out and am taking the little DR given the % of gravel - I find the 1150 can be a handful in the deep 'windrows' around the McKenzie country and I feel more comfortable on the lighter bike in such conditions.

As to travel - I'll riding through Molesworth or Rainbow (the latter, if i get a 'buddy') leaving Picton between 11.30 & noon on the Thursday before the event.

I cut up the Road Book today and put it into the lunch box....It sure is small,

I mean not many legs. This must mean there is a shit load of riding before turning....That's great!

I also found out that for the Dakar 2010, the GPS is only used for the last 3Km of each stage, the ride still has to be done by the road books. The beacons are turned on and they can find the waypoint home ONLY for the last 3Km....

So, using a Road Book in my mind is a sound way of navigating and having the GPS as the back up is prudent too....

Ryan, turn off the beacons...lol

I've made a GPS file with just numbered waypoints at the places that correspond with most the roll chart cells.
I'll probably nav with a combo of mostly the chart and a bit of double checking via the GPS.

If I take my camera gear then maybe I should be looking at mounting it backwards at you then

Pays to have someone in the frame most of the time as a point of interest, to give the video some perspective and a little life.

I will be mounting my camera at the back as well. If anyone wants to be behind me and compete for an Academy Award, I will capture it! I will also have it on my helmet and the obligatory Possum Cam - Front Mudguard

Nice to have cut scenes to use.
Unfortunately mine isn't a self contained unit (I remember the conversation about your purchase) and so is rather stuck firmly in one place... on my helmet near the top of my backpack to which it is attached by wires to the contents of said backpack.

I've got a bit keen on trying to get back to the Capital Coast for this year so can't go buying any new stuff anytime soon.

Yes, this is cool as I can move it around, mount it in a different place. I get home, play around with the editing, paste in music and go from there. I have found the best position is the helmet or goggle strap.
The rear vibrates a little, the front has the big DR beak gettin' in the way, the only real hard footage that is steady is the 'swede'....Me!

RE: Orari Gorge detour
For those who are interested...
I have made arrangements with the two neighbouring properties to gain access thru the Orari Gorge 4x4 track from near Geraldine to Fairlie on Friday.
If you are interested send me a pm (to keep track of numbers) the cost is $10pp payable to farmer and we willl meet at Caltex Russley cnr Yaldhurst/Russley rds for a 10:00am departure
