Speedos can be off along way. It'd not unusual for the factory speedo to be off by 6,7,8,9,10%!! And then if you lower gearing (on a gearbox driven speedo) this will make the speedo read even more optimistic.
Aaron, how is your R1 geared? stock? down 1 in the front? up 2 on the rear?

I put a GPS on my mates 98 R1 a couple of years ago and his speedo was 11% fast. He was geared 1 down on the front and 1 down on the rear. He was most dissapointed after his speedo told him 288kmh, but in reality was around 260KMh.

You could work it in with that, they've already got the timing gear.

Aaron: Ask Stone Chucker how accurate R1 gearbox driven speedos are, I think he saw 250 something on his first run, actual time, 230.
Yeah im dead keen.(no pun intended) i was thinking of Wigram airbase its not used for planes anymore, and its dead flat and nice and long, i know my speedo is out(i dont think and R1 would do a genuine 313kph) but a mate on a gsxr1000 has followed me while doing a wheelie and clocked me at 235(my speedo read 241) but none the less i recon it can be done, and i guess while my bike looks like a hunk of shit its the best time to practice.

My bike, when aroused, is capable of travelling at at least 2.3 times the speed of sound.
    ... and that's what I think.

My "not quite as streamlined as a brick shit-house" 'lorry' has been timed at 131mph (go figure it out yourself).

Too true- I've got a mag that did Dyno runs on all of the 04 1000's. While riders were seeing 299kph on the R1's speedo, the dyno told a different story- it was only geared to do 280.

Mind you, they might not have dynoed it in top gear

    Arrow Well.

As I no longer get off on stunts, I'll be impressed from them all. If someone here should be keen to try, I'd like to watch...
