You may have mis read what I said... not the bars... the levers. The bars need to be tight. The clamp that holds the levers to the bar (called the perch) can be loosened enough that if you fall off it'll rotate on the bar rather than breaking or bending but if it hits the ground the wrong way... don't think anything will stop it breaking. Warewolf's idea is great that if you pre drill/file a hole at a certain point on the lever it'll break there so it can still be used to get you home. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Enjoy your riding.
