FIRST BIKE - Dual DRZ250 - Any recommendations?

Hi,

New to the forums, just got my first bike ever, a almost new 2007 DRZ250.

Just wondering what tips/tricks/modifications people might recommend? Anything is great, its all learning for me!

Since the bike is in such good condition I'd really like to protect what I can. I've heard the stator cover gets damaged pretty easily (Mg), and is a bash plate worth it?

I've read about a few simple mods (drilling holes in air box, etc). Do you have to report these for insurance though?

Now welcome to the big wide world of adventure riding...
I am sure you will learn a great deal from the guys here, all are very knowledgeable....
As far as the Insurance angle goes....? Nope, Just don't tell em....
You haven't change anything really, they were ther all the time and as you are a new rider you aren't aware of these things....
Afterall, this is why you are here asking the questions right?
Just do it......It isn't like you are adding a turbo to the beast...
You might gain a little breathing room but not much power...Enjoy it all, it is fun out there!

Hell yes, don't go anywhere near any rocks or big stones with out one.
At the very least small stones (even just from a shingle road) will strip the paint off the frame making it look unloved, at the worst a bigger hit could put a hole in your under belly if it's exposed.

Yes

This is what can happen if you take your new bike off-road without a bash plate: Dave goes ooopps, bugger.

Oh my god... thats terrable....he should have brought a bash plate....silly boy....

yea mate buy a plate.
one of the first things i put on. well worth the dollars.

AND we have all asked away haven't we? I know for sure there is a deep, deep knowledge book out there, and as for riding with all of 'em

id also put heated grips on and a long range tank, a corbin seat, swivle foot pegs, a coffey machine and a pie warmer.

yea i ask some dum ones sum time ...

AND, the Ipod hard wired for those rides with no mates..
The GPS hooked up to the battery of course too...
Oh, I forgot......
The DVD Player for the blokes too when you arrive at the hut! (or at least the DVD discs of the Dakar...) Keeps the fires burning over the fish and chips....

Thanks for all the replies! I thought I might get one or two in a week or so, not this many! Amazing!

Looks like I'll be investing in a bash plate asap then! I have a look around the forum, but anyone got recommendations of what/where to buy?

Would I need a stator/side gaurd as well as a bash plate?

Thanks for the reccos on the stuff to add too. Mmm, heated grips sounds pretty good actually, have to look into that.

Suppose I need to go out and get some gear too (helmet, jacket, gloves). Maybe there are some sales on....

Look into B&B (ausi made) bash plates. Never had any problems with side covers getting damaged myself and the B&B generally has pretty decient "wings" that protect these areas from the front.

Welcome aboard! Some aluminium handguards are a good investment - they'll save your levers during those inevitable drops.

no no no avoid the coffe machine it will wear your battery down and f@ck it, the pie warmers all good but it blows a fuse when the DVDs going at the same time.
