What to look for when looking for new(old) bike?

I want to get a motorbike. But i'm not massively mechanically clued up. I know the odd bit but I defefinately wouldn't say i know enough to properly check out a bike.

What are some simple things I should take a look at?

I'm in the Palmerston North area so most likely i will be looking at bikes near my home town.

gday. For a start, sort our your price range (budget for some gear!) and then work out a list of bikes that are in your range, an older kawasaki gpx, vtr, etc you can pick up for a good price, or a gn if you arent after a sporty bike.
Once you have a list of bikes that you like, and that are in your price range, make a post about it, asking owners of those bikes to point out the pros and cons of the particular bikes!
Also, find someone in your area to go with you to look at the bikes. KB is a very helpfull and friendly place for the most part, and a box of beer should be ample reward to get someone to take an hour or two to come with you to look at a bike.
In general look for signs of a drop/bin, scratches etc to fairings, look for small things that are indicative of regular maintenance, how does the chain look, has it been lubed?
Do they have any reciepts from maintenance? oil changes etc? ask lots of questions, check tyre wear.
Best advice really, is promise a box of piss to someone in the know to come look at a bike with you once you have found one you like. That way you will meet other riders that may also help teach you, and people you can go on rides with. Good luck with the bike hunt!
