    Fastest Dirtbike award...

Seems they've created a new category in the other hemisphere , seems 2 strokes might be waning but still alive . KX500 does 126 mph at an airstrip and, ..looks like a pretty standard bike too.

You'll have to visit ... twostrokemotocross.com for a look , can't paste it as my system has a pig related virus.

    Achooo !!

    Pretty interesting site.

Back in 1981 Dirt bike magazine did a test with a KTM495 that they got 123.75 miles per hour on a STD bike.

Ron Bush was the rider and it was made on the El Mirage Dry Lake which is pretty good considering they would have been getting tyre slip because of the surface.

Excellent Site agreed, and apart from the street tyres and lowered bars the big Green runs only a little faster than the KTM ....bring back the 500's and re-invent the Open Class, I'm sure the world won't stop turning. More fun to ride, more fun to watch, quieter and lighter too. Bring 'em back and I might start visiting MX events again, the raspy 4 strokes are very boring ...

My KTM will only pull 165 with motard wheels and gearing. 155 with knobs on. Well short of the KX500

What a top site - thanks for the heads up. Amazing monster CR engine for that kiwi design jetpack thing.

This article is a beauty and a 'must read' for 2t fans:

Standard KTM injected 2t rumour Ha ha (fingers crossed though).

Don't quote me on this, but I'm 99% sure dirt bike magazine got just over 130mph outta a stock 500XC Husky two stroke, in about '85-'86? Anyone else remember this?

About the same for my 525 - 167 km/h on its own telltale speedo (however accurate or inaccurate it may be) with 14/42 gearing and street tyres, flat out.

In a more accurate measurement, it did 150 km/h in the speed trap at Meremere at the end of the quarter mile into a screaming headwind.

Standard gearing for my '04 KX500 means it'll run to about 90 mph in top or maybe a bit less though I do remember a story from Dirt Bike Mag in the US that they had a new KX , re-geared and acheived 117 mph on sand out of the box , I'd guess the CR500 would do similar at a slightly higher posted dry weight ( 101kg vs 100 ) and HP at 64 vs 65 but thats semantics so it would be about the same.
