1981 Yamaha XT 500 was my first "ADV"-type bike - had it from 84 thru 87. The model with the Black & Silver tank & White side covers. Should never have sold it ...![]()
Aah , the old gnat , now that brings back memories . My uncle had one and I did a bit of adventuring on that, along with the pushbikes and dads 3 landrovers that we got our off-road fun on , we didnt have motorbikes or horses as dads family was staunchly anti motorbike and horse due to unpleasant previous experiences.
Learnt to ride on some sort of road bike 360cc around the streets of the North shore when I was 15, 3 up with a couple of mates, how I never fell off I'll never know.
Then I got a DR400 back before the kids were born (oldest is 18) had it for a couple of months.
Then got an F650 about 3 months before the 08 Dusty butt.
The rest is history
Yamaha DT100. Rode to college every day. Would go riding up the Horokiwi hills at lunchtime and after school. Following the bulldozers around the new subdivisions in Newlands, Paparangi, and Churton Park.
Experience......something you get just after you needed it
Ha now were talking.
we had a old round head light holden station wagon,EH cant recall off hand. and a old black vanguard for padock cars,, and when i was learning to drive the landy, i crashed it in to the plow..., which was hooked up to the david brown tractor...
dad wasnt to happy,so he got out he sledge hammer and fixed the big dent in the front of the landy...

TF100 mudbug. I was about 8 years old.
Used to 'borrow' my brothers 1984 XL250 and ride the Makairo track when I was 13. Always had a bike of some sort.
When's your 40th Joe? (you've got a few years on me also).![]()
First bike i ever rode was one of those benelli monkey bikes, must ave been about 5 and it was a mate of my brothers. Rode it straight into the clothesline.
First real adventure bike was a 79 Dt175, fantastic bike used to ride it up and down the beach in Greymouth, then when I got a license we used to do miles and miles of the gravel roads out the back of Grey and Kumara. Graduated to an IT175j and just did the same but faster, raced it a bit too.
I remembe gnats too joe, there were a lot of them round the wairarapa in the olden days.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
i finely found a guy thats got one that still working.
he going to send me some photos.

My first adv machine was a "willy's jeep pedal car" got brother and I got taken home my Police for our own safety ( riding down streets on Napier hill) first adv bike was early 70's Suzuki TS 400 , one sold on ebay fully restored for US$7000-00 recently
Boys can't ride broken toys.
Joe - you look like a young Tex Morten on that horse.
My first "adv" bike was a BSA 350 that not only had a vicious kick-back but also had the annoying habit of ripping off the front mud guard when mud built up on the tyre. The two XL250 Motosports that followed were dream machines in comparison.
Being a life long Jaffa, we didn't have that many gravel roads around so adventure biking wasn't really on the cards unless you count bicycles thru the new subdivisions. The earliest gravel and motorcycles I can remember was on a Ducati 750GT with clip-ons & rear sets in the late 70's around northland. I don't recall it being a very fun experience.![]()
My first bike was a 1974 Yamaha DT60, we had an empty section next door to us with a big dirt pile in the middle and i used to ride untill the bike ( and lawnmower ) had no gas left in it.
A few years later i progressed to my 1st registered bike whick was a 1977 XL175 which had a 230 poweroll big bore kit fitted with hot cams. I was 13-14 at the time and that thing used to regularly kick back when starting and sometimes lift me off the seat![]()
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time
My first bike was a 1982 XT 125 great little bike, had lots of fun getting stuck in the mud at the mouth of the Mot river.
Wish I still had it.![]()
