now now - this is a positive outcome. overdue, but positive.

As soon as they realise that all they need to do is put me and Sarge in charge, and it would all be sorted, the better.

I will be honest here, i have been driving for 5 years and have done close on 200000kms in that time in small hatch backs, big SUVs, Vans and motorbikes. I have eaten, drank (not alcohol) Texted (not often but it dose happen) answered phones, placed calls and red maps while driving (not books tho).

And i have not come remotely close to a prang over it, i have selected the time and the place, i have chosen my road position, speed and distance to other road users. So as a result i have been ralitivly safe.

Before you shoot me i am acknowledging what i have done not what i do now and not what i recommend doing.

Okay, BD that's just weird. Although the wife seems pretty flexible.

There have also been a stack of stories of drivers crashing while doing the self pleasure thing. I remember the story from a year ago where the driver crashed into a school bus and knocked himself unconscious. The first people on the seen found him with his pants down and a sex toy fitted.

Driving a huge hunk of metal you really need to pay attention to the road. Those things can do a lot of damage. The recognition of the responsibility for controlling the hunk of metal seems to be missing.

8 years in prison - doesn't seem unduly harsh to me. Hopefully some others may think about being a bit more responsible when hurtling along the road at 120mph in a tonne & a half of steel & glass.

Whilst I don't disagree about texting whilst driving being dangerous, I do wonder where all this will end. There was something on TV about all this yesterday and someone was suggesting that even talking on hands free was a dangerous distraction, now extending that logically it would mean that ultimately anything that could cause a distraction whilst driving should be banned. This would include stereos, eating, drinking, GPS devices, heaters and A/C controls,CB radios and other communication devices (so that's all the emergency services ruled out, and the vast majority of trucks) then there's traffic cops operating radars with instant-on and of course the ultimate distraction - passengers....

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes

Yes. The problem with the cell phone is the distraction to the brain not the loss of one hand.

Yeah, this is as I understood it as well. The main issue was the simple fact that you were talking to someone on the cellphone, not the fact that you're holding it to your ear.

The argument then runs into whether you get the same levels of distraction talking to a passenger in the car.

I think a lot of it comes down to people who drive subconsciously. They follow the road and keep in the correct gear/speed range entirely without being conscious of doing it and paying not much attention to it. As soon as these people are distracted by anything (be it a cellphone, a pie or whatever) what little attention they were paying is gone completely.

    Just a thought really.

    Hope they ban McDonalds too!

The moron that crossed the center line and hit me head on was bending down to pick up his milkshake. Fucking glad I had a car wrapped around me for that one.

I think there would be a few - blue tooth and all. There are plenty with intercoms.

At least they still have their limbs and eyes on the job.
