BMW servicing etc - Christchurch area

Being fairly new to the area can anyone offer advice on this please. I went to the local dealership - Canterbury Rides in Christchurch - to buy some parts - oil filter etc. and found out that they are due to close (including the Yamaha franchie that they also operate there). So, any experience of other dealers servicing BMWs within a reasonable distance of Christchurch? Thanks for any help.

Hamdon Honda not sure who to ask for, Dirt Action Services ask for Linton, & Hornby Suzuki ask for Phil, I do know that any one of these will be able to help

Is that the place on Ferry Road? I once looked into buying a BMW GS so visited this 'dealership'. It was a tip (the office looked like a bomb had gone off) and the garage part seemed to be staffed by young 'oiks' that I wouldn't let check my tyre pressure, let alone service a BMW. It wasn't the sophisticated, modern dealership I had anticipated. I never went back.

Maybe you should just source your parts online?

Looks can be deceiving, pity you didn't look any further than your own prejudice because Jimmy who's just lost his job is a qualified BMW mechanic as well as various other makes and models. The other younger fella was an apprentice and good bloke. I was in there the other day and saw the result of his (Jimmy's) hard work in bringing back to life an old 750 Katana for a customer, bike sounded better than new. Would you prefer he dresses up in a suit and tie? Every time I've gone in there (and I go in at least once a month) the place is immaculate, you sure you got the right place???? And by the way, as far as checking tyre pressure goes, Jimmy worked out the problem with the bike I took in before a bloody computer could tell us, so much for technology.

I belive that you can contact Jim, and he'll service anything from home, till thing get sorted, before the new owners or Fanchise operators pick it up.

Never encountered the 'bomb had gone off' situation. Everytime I go there the show room and work shop is clean and tidy. The office had a lot more paper work around, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Last time I went got a chance to see a police bike up close as well.

Family business and had good experience with them. They also open on Sat afternoon unlike the other dealers round town.

I don't think their location helped, Manchester Street is what I call 'bikers alley'. When Sportzone had their opening the other week, all the other shops were open too, it was really good to walk around looking at and talking about bikes with like minded people. The owner of Street and Sport is a good bastard too, he's always chatty without being pushy.

I used to go to Street and Sport for tyres etc.Found them a bloody good bunch.

Thanks for all the feedback, yes it is the dealership on ferry Road, but it was pretty smart when I went in - even had one of the new Cross-Plane Crank R1s for sale - first time I'd seen one close up. Great shame when any business has to close - particularly a bike shop. I'll save the number for their mechanic and give him a call in due corse - thanks for that. If he is that good, I'm sure he'll be snapped up by one of the other dealerships before too long.Next step is to start exploring this fantastic area and make the most of the roads. Cheers to all.
