Got myself a brand new SFV650 Gladius

2 weeks ago. Brand new, only 500ks on the clock so far and already I've noticed some rust on the chain I took possesion of the bike ready to ride.... all lubed up and, granted the chain wax was the bare minimum but, I thought adeqaute enough to see me through to the initial first thousand ks

Just wondering.... is this normal?? I've only rode it once in the rain.

500 kms from new and you haven't lubed the chain yet? Unless you have a scottoiler or similar you should lube your chain regularly, not just wait until the next service.

However to put your mind at ease, what you see is most unlikely to be rust, see if it wipes off with a cloth, you might just be suprised.

No, the chain was adequately waxed up when it arrived...... with a chain wax. I did give the bike a very thorough look over before riding it. I thought the wax would be enough to see it through to the first thousand ks before I cleaned and waxed/lubed it up again..... am I wrong?

The frequency that a chain gets lubed depends a lot on the type of riding you do and the conditions that you ride in. Before fitting a scottoiler I would lube the cahin either weekly or after every 2nd tank full of gas, or after every ride in the rain or gravel. That would give me around 8000 - 10000 kms of life from a chain. Now with ascottoiler I get 18000 - 240000 kms from a chain.

you need to lube the chain regularly (on the outside every 500km) preferably more often

sweet.... thankyou very much fellas. I'm starting to feel like a bit of a doofus I always thought every thousand ks would be alright. I'll give it a damn good clean and wax at the earliest opportunity then every 500 or so after that.

I've always done a lube on my chains every 500km ... my Big Ol'Hornet has just had its first chain change at 50 000km ... and that was the ol'fashioned spray it on way! I've got a touring scottoiler kit on it now, so will be interested to see how it goes!

My lil'ol'hornet had its first chain change around 45000km, and that was also lubing it every 500km as well. Put the effort in and you shall be rewarded!

It really shouldn't ever be so unlubed that it rusts.

Did I see you last week at the Chelsea View Road lights turning on to Mokoia Road?

Nice bike, really does stand out as something different.

yeah absolutely, I've never had rust on my other bikes chain.... I've always taken good care of them. Just a little concerned that, this bikes new, and had wax on it.... after a week of owning it I've found a little rust.... surface rust. It will come off with a good clean of Kero I'm sure.
yeah probably was me.... my bikes the blue and white one. I may have looked a little unsteady....hehe. Its my first "bigger" than a 250 bike

Ohhh Gladius, nice score, really well priced for a 600 too imo.
I'd love to have a go on one.
