If you got "pinged" for an offence, thus losing your licence.... that was a seperate offence than those you got demerit points for.

My bet is you will still have 80 demerits on licence return. ....

Then again, I have been known to be wrong...

Errr, yes there is, you'll need to read the whole thing, but it specifically discusses when you'll lose your license and how long demerits stand for.

The MOT aren't interested. Ring LTNZ - or whatever they are called this week.

Hrm, on the subject of demerits, I went over the 100 limit around two and a half to three years ago (probably by some fair margin as my last ticket was a bit of a doozy). For one reason or another, I've never heard from the cops or had anyone knocking on my door. I've always kept my licensing information up to date with the LTSA so I'm not quite sure what's going on. I even called 'em up once wondering what the deal was, the operator told me I was over the limit and to expect my license to be seized.

Probably 18 months after I went "over the threshold", I knocked up an additional, but very minor, speeding ticket ($80, I believe) which I paid without incident.

I'm glad to say that I have learnt my lesson, even if it had to be brow beaten into me with repeated ticketing and the eventual possibility of losing my license. Has anyone else had any experience with a situation like this?

I understand that you can ring up LTNZ (or whatever they are called) and find out exactly how many demerit points are posted against your license. The nice lady on the answer phone tells you which button to push to get the answer........

Yeah, but as you could understand, I don't exactly want to set the wheels in motion by perhaps coming across someone who's going to recognise the mistake and send someone out to collect my license

When I called the first time, it wasn't long after I went over the threshold, so the lady I spoke with probably didn't think anything was amiss. However, it's now in excess of 2-3 years since I should've had it taken from me and will probably be a bit more plain to see.

I did look on the LTSA website this morning, and the wording indicated that you "MAY" (exact word) have your license taken from you if you break 100 demerits. I thought this choice of wording was somewhat interesting.

Heh! Demerits expire after a 2 year period, so you'll be all good again

I had heard that, but I'd also heard the occassional rumour that after tipping over the 100 point mark, they remain in place until some kind of action is taken. However, an ex-flatmate of mine once exceeded 100 points for a couple of weeks after paying for a recently received ticket tipped him over the edge. Two or three weeks later, demerits from a ticket received just over 2 years prior were wiped off, taking him below 100 again. The short time between the two events may have played into his favour, though.

I stalked the LTSA website hoping for some kind of automated system for checking the current status, but alas, to no avail.

I guess I'm resigned to a life lived in license limbo (how's that for alliteration?) until I man up and call the LTSA, again.

Have you ever considered not speeding/drink/running red lights? I know it's worked wonders for me, and I've never had trouble keeping my license squeaky clean.
