    Trouble with cold starting

Im having trouble with starting my bike('07 YZ450F). The only way it seems to start if I do:

Choke, clutch in, put into gear, pull the decom. in and then kick. Do a couple of kicks, take it out of gear, and then just kick it over with choke, decom. and out of gear and seems to fire up after following this. If I dont sort of follow this it wont start. Anyone got some ideas as where I could start to find out why it isnt starting straight away? Something im doing wrong? Other people have the same problem with this bike?

I found with my YZF that giving it one or two twists of the throttle before kicking help to fire it up in 1-2 kicks.

That lever on your bars is not a decomp the 450s have a auto decomp set up built in to the exhaust cam. Your pulling in the hot start which will not help at all with cold starting.

Yup leave the hot start and throtle alone in neutral As the neutral switch can be pain if in gear.

typically first start of the day / cold starting, youll need to use the choke, and give the throttle 2 or 3 pumps. there is literally a pump which squirts fuel thru when you give the throttle a twist.

every bike ive ridden with a hot start, you only need to use the hot start when you've really been raping it and it gets quite hot- eg racing. never needed it on a trail

i cant see how the putting it in gear method is helping you other than making you more tired (assuming your clutch sticks a little bit when its in gear like everyone else does)

Cheers guys. Yea I dont know myself why putting it in gear seems to help, just has worked so go with it. This is the first 4-stroke ive had so finding bits and peices about it and how it works. Thought it was partly due to the cold weather as well that it hasnt been easy starting. I use the choke whenever its the first start of the day but doesnt seem to be enough sometimes, just keep on kicking the damn thing with nothing happening, but will try your methods, so thanks again.

try pulling the choke out 2 twists of throttle and some short rapid kicks of the kick start then when it fires 1 good full kick

Anyone else wondering what the hot-start lever does? (like, inside the engine) And how does this make a hot start easier or more reliable?

It opens a valve in the carb which allows a shot of xtra cool air to bypass the carb guess the xtra O2 helps with combustion

Ahh ic. Blardy hell I can see why that would make a cold start a problem.

My bike is a bitch to start on a cold morning......partner reckons the fuel freezes in the lines when its on the trailer heading to a ride (wind chill factor etc) I usually combat this by starting it at home in the gge first to warm up while I hook the trailer up etc.
Another issue with starting was the valves - they get gunked up or something.......pffft fk i know, Greg from spectrum has tootooed with it for us and it starts much better now.........

Good Luck. - lol sucks being that person who kicks n kicks n kicks in the carpark
