Make sure it's not in gear, turn the fuel on, pull the choke out. Then push the kick starter to top dead center with your foot, let the kickstarter return to full height. Put some weight behind it and push (not stab) right through the stroke, smooth and hard. repeat that from TDC and I bet it fires after a couple. Don't bother with gears, throttles, and hot starts from cold.

Tried it on my bike, it's been sitting in the workshop for about 3 weeks and hasn't been started, it's always been a prick of a thing to start first off, so when i got to work, yeah give it a go, first kick
would do everything except twisting the throttle.
I always thought it was a F**king Suzuki thing.

cheers mate, i lean't something new today
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

Cheers for that. Thought didnt have to do TDC anymore on the newer models..? Will try and remember the run down to getting it started on the weekend.

Yea my 03 yzf450 has auto decomp and a hot start lever although everyone kept saying it was decomp lever even the shop i got it from until i got my hands on a Yamaha manual! ...Ahh says hot start lever LOL...... did get some good advice when starting and got it down to 2 kicks on a good day...

Push the kick start down slowly and lightly.... until it hits a hard patch normally half way down....... then let it all the way up and kick it like you have never kicked before lol and repeat...

Also another thing that works if i open the choke (When cold) and turn the fuel on leave it, like go and get my gear come back it will normally kick over sooner. Don't know why and don't really care lol...

Also does say in the Yamaha manual if its going to be parked up for a while like a month or two, poor teaspoon of engine oil (Same grade as what goes in the bike) down the spark plug hole and put the plug back in. In a month or so kick it and should start 2-3 kicks... im guessing it would smoke for like first 5mins burning that oil.. but if its in the manual can't be bad for it

    Yes Genuine Yamaha Manual
