    NZ Rego cost

I've just re-taxed my Guzzi for a year - it's cost me £66 - I earn about £450 take home per week - so that's about 15% of my weekly - when I get it MOT'd (read WOF) it costs me £38 per year (8.5%) - how does this compare with NZ?
Compulsory full insurance over here costs me about £160 per year - again how does that compare with NZ?

Please don't just start converting dollars to pounds - relate it to what sort of percentage of take home pay - that's a more realistic comparison.

I'm hoping to be back in NZ later this year, so I'm trying to work out what sort of salary I could live on

IME - An annual UK take home pay of $450/week is equivelent to about $950 here for the same job.

BUT in general, living in NZ is a great deal cheaper and there is a lot of stuff you can do for free that costs a lot in the UK (apart from putting your garbage out and seeing a doctor).

    FYI:

    MOT/WOF = $28
    12 month Rego $382
    Annual insurance $700 per annum.

The 12 month registration costs more for motorcycles than for cars because there is a large ACC levie in there.

Fuel is presently at about $1.55 per litre, but changes regularly.

I am not sure that this is a good way to work out your salary requirement as general living expenses in NZ are a great deal less. I suggest that you take a look on www.trademe.co.nz to get an idea of rental proprerty costs in NZ.

    Good luck.

OHHHHH... dont get me started on farking rego, thanks to people that ride beyond their capibilitys 'etc' the acc levey is well OTT... but then again I think thats a bullshit excuse to scalp us for more money, I mean like go figger how my diesel narvara costs mor to regester than a petrol one Ohhh, I know theres more diesels on the rd so the gvt makes more, cos surley its not because diesels crash and petrols dont FFS

does that answer ya question... wages differ so much here that equating income percentage to rego cost is kinda eralavent.
    cheers DD

Its difficult ot calculate as a percentage of pay - jobs here are worth totally different to jobs in the UK in a lot of ways. e.g. a friend worked in the UK for years as a programmer - earnt very good by the pound then came back and now earns what he did by the dollar as when he left. Way less even when converted.

As for wages... as they said they vary, and it depends where you love as to the cost of living... Im not on a huge wage, and actually I could earn more if I moved to ChCh, ie; I live in Dunedin I don't earn as much for the same job in Auckland, but the cost of living in Dunedin is cheaper in many respects

Yellowdog's rego quote is correct. You've somehow been very lucky. Rego went up at the start of this month.

Don't ya just love how they put our ACC levi's trough the roof because of dumbarse scooter riders getting fucked up with no gear.... or big bike riders in jeans a t shirt sneakers and no gloves... i'm not going into the "it's the riders choice" bullshit... because put simply they come off they get nailed and the rest of us have to foot the bill.

That leads nicely on the next question - I just paid £51 for a scale and polish at the dentist - how does that compare?

I know that the cost of living has so many variables depending on location/desires/necessities etc. - I'm trying to get a feel for the things I will HAVE to pay for when I get back.

PAH! PAH! and a little more PAH! it ain't that much cheaper... Moved from Glasgow nearly 3 years ago... By our reckoning, eating out, food in general (although the meat isn't as good here, sorry!), Petrol/Diesel and car park spaces are about the only things i class as value for money here... but the quality of life is so much better...

Like you say, lost of variables and swings and roundabouts, all depends on what you want to buy...

I believe dentists are rather expensive here!!!
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Instead of comparing wages I have always found the best comparison for 'cost of living' is the price of tinned baked beans. Now about 11 years ago I remember being able to buy the budget brand of beans in Tesco for only 10p on special. Here your looking at about 80c on special. The cost of food/rent here is comparable to minimum wage - another good comparison to use. There is no real 'average' wage here - the unions stuffed that up.

The meat is better here however you are not allowed to buy it.

NZ has a "Reverse Frog Economy".

The French keep the good stuff for themselves and subsidise it so that all can afford it. They export the absolute crap, that is not good enough for the refined French pallet, to everyone else.

The Kiwis export the top quality good stuff as well as letting the expensive restaurants buy it. The natives are allowed to buy and eat the crap that is not fit for export however load this price so we all pay through the nose.

Go to Aussie and buy a some Kiwi meat and you will see what I mean. I have bought the good stuff here in NZ direct from an exporter in Hamilton. It has no comparison to what is available in the supermarkets.

    Any farmers out there?

In fact, we even subsidise the exports of the good stuff...
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!
