    Forks jammed solid?

I did a pre-purchase inspection of a crashed bike yesterday. The bike appears to have run directly into something, like maybe rear-ending a car.

The front wheel has been pushed back into the fairings and it has broken the steering tube (the bit with the steering head bearings on).

The (upside down) forks appear to be straight as far as the eye and the straight-edge are concerned, BUT the stanchions are locked solid in the fork tubes. I jumped up and down on the bike but the forks (or at least one of them) were completely immovable.

Any suggestions on what is going on with these forks? The bike is a bargain if it wasn't for the fucked front end.

    TIA,
    Steve

So that "happens" ? Shocks lock solid if you whack them? What is likely to be the situation internally ?

Try sticking something firm halfway into a hole - them slowly bend it up - notice how difficult it is to slide out of the hole while bent?

Technically when referring to forks they use the term female member instead of hole and male member for the slider, but I thought that would be crude....

Realistically if you are considering purchasing, allow for the cost of a full replacement front end. If it is still a good deal and you purchase, you can always send it off to Robert or Shaun for a full strip down and inspection.

Most fucked things would be a bargain if it weren't for the fucked bit. It's sort what fucked means.

Smash hard enough to shear the steering head is almost bound to have distorted or bent the frame.

Ah yeah, aint that the truth, shirl.

If the forks looked straight to me, yet they won't move a mm, then I guess I don't have a shits' show of telling if the frame is straight. Looks like its a basket case, price well above basket case pricing. Oh well.

Cheers all. I think I'll leave it.
