    Question Wellington - Parking

Due to recent events of motorcycle vandalism i.e. CSL getting her Speedo smashed and bike tampered with outside work in Boulcott Street, Wellington

It’s likely I’ll be working in Wellington central soon and have been thinking about where to leave my bike. Unfortunately, hearing CSL’s story doesn't make me feel very confident about leaving it out in the open.

I parked my car in Duxton’s parking lot the other day and saw a few bikes at the bottom under the exit ramp.
Does anybody know how much it costs to park up in there and is it actually safer (not that I really want to be paying anything)?

Also, would you recommend using a chain or disk lock, or do you think just the steering lock is okay?

    Cheers in advance guys.

    Tough call

I'd gotta go with a chain. While it is the most bother to carry, it's the most visible for shitmongers thinking of stealing the bike. And obviously, always lock your steering.

As for location, opposite the kiosk in a parking garage is the safest option imho. Probably like $8+ per day? Expensive, but thats what peace of mind costs. (flirt with the female operator, and it could be free)

Personally, I'd never leave my bike unnatended in Wgtn, or any CITY for that matter, for any length of time. Society is inherantly malicious and jealous.

Mines kept underground in a parking "facility". I've parked it out in the open for ages and no-ones touched it yet.

I have had some bad luck when I parked my mvf4 at Petone when someone thought it'd be cool to sit on and didn't know about the suicide stand

I keep mine hidden in an underground carpark under work, with restricted access and security cameras and I still get paranoid sometimes.. Bugger leaving it on the street all day, I'd be a nervous.

I heard underground parking was the most secure so have been doing it at my place. Takes forever to dig the thing up to go for a ride though.

about 3 or 4 times since I have been working in wellington I have come back to my bike at home time and found that some dimwit has left the keys in their bike.
So I just got on the bike and rode off.
Good job it was my bike...

yeah i found i cool bike on the street outside my g/fs place a couple weeks ago with the keys hangin out the side..... got on and took it to work........ hmmm twas mine......

I'm usually fairly concerned about the safety of ma bike, i park right outside work on lambton quay, and use an alarmed disc lock, it gets really loud if anyone sits on it, wiggles the handlebars etc, the loud lasts 10sec after they stop touchin it so dont have to run for every sqeuak,...... (wind sets it off sometimes...)
handy too so as I cannot attempt to ride off with the disc lock attached!

maybe employing a couple of vigilanti/bike security officers could be a viable option for the welly KB crew, even if everyone posted where they park (in a neat list) so we can all watch out for everyone elses rides.....

Used to park mine in the work's underground park (where LiasTZ parks his) as I did not trust the bike park on Ward Street because of the way Mazdabators and other street-trash hoon up the road (could just see it getting clipped by some in a cage, brain addled by the distorted noise coming out of the massive sub that takes up most of the boot/back seat)

No longer a worry now that they've turned the bike park into a LZ (would love to see a Mazdabator clip one of the big delivery trucks tho')

Fark on-street parking for a lark.

    Hey Groins,
Don't be put off by my bad parking experiences. My bike ahs been blown over twice (which is just one of those things) and the recent vandalism actually took place in a non-motorcycle parking area. Plus I work late and that area is lacking in peolpe late in the evening.

    Cheers CSL

I agree, generally in Wellignton your bike should be safe from vandels but you can never be sure it is safe from that bloody wind!!! Mine was tossed over last month. Celtic, did you see that blue GSX250 had been chucked about by the wind yesterday on Mercer street. I think this is where your bike was damaged from memory? Try and get a park in your work building if you can, borrow an access card and stick it somewhere out of the way.

Where is this? The only underground car park I know of it at Sky City. Or is that one in the centre of town public aswell?

LiasTZ and I both work at the Tower Building on Ward St, Hamilton. There are two underground parking areas beneath our building - not public. On one level there are support pillars near the walls (just enough gap between the pillar and the wall to fit a bike, not a cage) so we park there - not taking up a precious parking space so we're allowed to and we have a modicum of protection (cager would have to get really inventive to hit the bike)
