In breaking news , the Queen, the Pope, the Prime Minister and the President are to summon a joint conference to express the deep personal affront they feel at being definate articled.

I am a bit oldfashioned about somethings, and very modern about others. I hesitate to call myself feminist, and even though I did actually burn bras back in the day, I have never been able to identify myself with feminism. I shave my legs for starters

However, there is something that seriously grates on me, and I see it on here so many times. Since when, just because I am married should I be referred to as THE wife?

Come on, seriously, think about this a bit.

We refer to the table or the chair. We might say the bus or the ticket or heaven help us the car. I doubt I have ever read on here anyone refer to their bike as THE bike. It is always my bike, my pride and joy, my new toy or what have you.

    Food for thought eh.
Totally agree...it should me "My" eh?

He thinks 'partner' sounds too businesslike.
We're both too old for him to call me his 'girlfriend'.

So as a result, he has to call me by my name!
I would like you yo meet THE other half

Indeed. One does not possess one's wife, demonic though one may be. One is privileged that she has chosen one to share her life with one.

I guess it is a values system.

You see, with the bike you can invest time on it, improve it, tweak it here and there, get it looking really nice and shiny and clean, tinker around with it a bit. The bike is completely in sync with you, thinks the same as you, your soul mate if you like.

And the woman you sleep with each night, well, shes just THE WIFE. She can't understand you like the bike can. You can't take her for a ride whenever *you* want. You can't "dress" her up (especially with what you would like to!). And spending time with her usually means strings have to be attached (next thing she'll be wanting you to take her out to dinner or something). And lets face it, she's probably not thinking the same as you, and almost certainly wants to do different things to you - and as a consequence doesn't want you doing what you want to do when you want to do it.

So all these things about a relationship with a woman can be summed up by and communicated between guys with the simple two words, "THE WIFE". And everyone knows what you mean and what you are going through.

I'm with Mom...I am not THE wife, and if my lovely man ever referred to me as such, I would slap his ears good and fast!
THE wife...the car, the lawnmower...nah, its just wrong!
