BHS age limit?

I have a friend's son who is 14 at the moment and I'm encouraging him to get his motorbike licence when he sits his cars learners licence later this year.
He has already been playing with pocket bikes and enjoying the fun.

I was trying to figure out if there is an age limit for doing your BHS. I can't spot anything on the LTSA site about age, and can't find anything searching the forums here.

So I'm thinking there is no age limit, and he could do it now. Is this correct?

That is correct, but the certificate expires quite quickly, so it will be no use to get it too early.

I'd call the examiner up and ask them.

It hadn't even occurred to me it might expire. Does anyone know how long they are good for?

Actually, what I have said might not be correct with regards to age, but the certificate does expire.

My son did the course with me when I sat mine. He was 14 at the time and was told that he had to be 15 in order to sit the actual test at the end of it. He was also told that once he turned 15 he could come back, refresh his memory while my husband did the course, and only had to pay for the test part at the end.
The instructor was impressed with Pete's handling of the bike, but as I said, wouldn't allow him to sit the test while still under 15.

I sat my BHS in 99 (yes 10 years ago) and finally got round to getting my learners this year

Later ones might have had an expiry perhaps, but the lady at the AA even called the ltsa to check and it was fine.

i dont see why he cant sit the BHS only the actual test he wont be able to sit till hes 15

Is there any reason for him to sit his BHS certificate? assuming he can actually ride a step thru bike you may be better to take him to a secluded area and judge his skill/confidence for yourself (under controlled circumstances of course).
When eligible, he can sit the BHS and get his learners etc. I'm not 100% sure but I think the BHS certificate does expire. I finally got mine about 12 months ago (after 12 years of riding) and I vaguely recall an expiry time on it.
In reality the BHS test is pretty basic and if he can ride already he will breeze through it. once he has his learners is when you can impart all of the knowlege you have accumulated on to him!

on a BSH test cert - I have had one accepted after 24 years, the AA people had to check with the LTNZ but they were told to accept it.
