Whoa... FMG is cheap. I just got full cover from protecta at $820 a year :/... I am an at risk under 25 male with a 'we dont cover zxr's (AA)' type bike etc. I got $820 a year through mt eden cycles on a deal... i think normally it is 950. 3rd party is 350 from the top of my head.

Good luck with finding the right insurance company.

FMG is farmers mutual group, I think based in Palmy,

I got mine through National Auto, one of the well known bike insurers and I pay $300 odd for full insurance. L plate, no history, 22yrs, 150cc

dont touch the bike personal lines insurers like aa, ami, state etc
they arent really that interested in bikes.
I only posted this because of the global economic crisis

Thumbs down Don't want to sound like an old man but...

...I wouldn't recommend third party insurance unless you're happy to write off the value of the bike after purchase and have no qualms about not getting insurance from an accident, (which with a <250 could well be the case).

Just that in my time here I've seen many posts where folks have had accidents/problems, through no fault of their own, but end up getting royally screwed because they only had 3rd party insurance.

Seems a pity that with some of the beautiful bikes folks ride here they're happy to skimp on the insurance.

    My 2c.

I opted for full insurance on my bike...went through National Auto Club (based in Whangarei but service is still good).

They will cover you over the phone temporarily too (for up to 10 days until the paperwork comes through).

I thought I was happy with it, but make sure you ask all the right questions...cost me $350 for 22yr male 250cc insured for $4k

I think 3rd party was about half that? But pays to check, might be cheaper? But likely not

If you get the 10 day temporary cover (ie over the phone) and decide not to go ahead, there is a $50 charge

Excess is HUGE, I have a $1200 excess on my insurance from memory, and if I cancel they will refund 80% of unused value. They only cover for 1 year intervals so can't get a 6 month policy.

Other than that, haven't had to use it yet so...so far so good.

I had 3rd party on my RGV (no theft cover) and it was 70$ a year with AMI ( who are a pack of greedy cunts at the best of times )

The reason I went with third party was because I was sick of being ripped off by insurance companies on other policies I had and it would cost me 600$ to get full cover.
The other reason is that my bike had already had major engine failure and been in a crash and I wasn't going to claim insurance for the cosmetic damage as losing my no claims raddy ra.... it wasn't worth it.
Also it was only worth 2500-3000 really and I could afford to replace that so I took the risk.

Didnt very much like dealign with Protecta after my first bike got toasted, so for my second bike I've gone with National Auto Club.

As wildcat said they will insure you over the phone, and price is good.

As a 25+ male with a learners, and one previous crash under my belt, its costing me around $300 a year to insure my GN250 for 3k. Excess is large, but not unreasonable ($700), which was a damn site less than Protecta's
