Holy shit. Kiel was a lovely guy, I had a few very nice conversations with him.

My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

Noll, I can't believe you're gone mate and can only pray you're in a better place.
Just realised I know Stephanies old man - she was from down this neck of the woods.
Must be a heart-wrench for her parents!!

I was on the phone to my brother, who's stationed at Whenupai, this morning and got a further update on what happened to the two airmen.

The first, Corporal Jeffrey Smith, failed to take a turn on Brigham Creek Rd, between Hobsonville and Whenuapai, at around 1:30am on Sunday and hit a power pole. Sad accident that may have been speed related, but them roads at night are a pig on a bike, particularly if its damp or wet. Lots of bare tar showing through.

When Kiel Nolly and his girlfriend lost thier lives, they were actually out on a commemorative run for their comrade with a group of other riders from Cpl Smiths squadron on the Riverhead/Kaukapapa Rd when a truck that they were passing did a right hand turn in front of them. Some of the other riders on the run were following directly behind them when it happened, so you may want to spare a thought for those who saw one of their mates go down, never to get up again.

Irony be damned, it's still a buggering shame.

WOW. Sounds like we might need to do something for the guys/gals out there to let them know there's people beyond those fences that care too.

You got any contacts there to help set something up?

I'd suggest a ride but well... you know - it's possible not the best thing at the mo. Maybe a drink out at the Old Albany pub (or whatever their hangout is) one night?
