Second service question

Hi,

I have a 2008 vstar xv250. I had its first service done on time (1000 klms) but for the last few months I haven't done much riding due to some health problems. I was told verbally that the second service should be done at 6000 klms, which I haven't reached yet.

I've decided to sell the bike as it looks like I can't ride for a long time yet and going through the service book it actually says "6 months/6000 klms - which ever comes first". It's been 8 months since the first service.

It's in great running order (just passed its warrant) but have I voided the warranty because I didn't do it in the 6 month time frame or is the 6000 klms target ok?

Yes, you have voided the warranty by the strictest standards...but I seriously doubt that you did any harm. It all depends on the dealer and the factory where you stand.

Just get it done when it reaches 6000km's. Don't worry about the 6 month part. It's not relevant.

Yeah i don't go by the time, but the km's measurement, and my bike runs fine. Unless you go to a really anal mechanic, i think you'll b sweet, especially if you've been taking care of her (keeping her sheltered, lubing the chain regularly etc).

NO the warranty is NOT voided- its on KMs that the MECHANICAL warranty services are counted -

Time ONLY applies to the overall maximum time limit of your warranty- eg it expires at exactly 12/24/36 months as per agreement-

Missing the '6 month' service is moot- its still under 6000 KMs - the servicing and repair factors are only counted on KMs for the warranty duration-

I don't think you would be covered if you had the same oil in it for 2 or 3 years just because you had still only done 5999 kms! The oil does break down. The service is there for other things as well, bearings, chains, brakes etc.
Because this is a 6 month service, still early in the bikes life, it may still have some sort of running in oil because aren't most services after the first one usually at 12 month intervals?

Best talk to the shop to explain your situatioon, I'm sure they probably wouldn't worry too much if it hadn't had much use & you're only a couple of months over. If you are selling though, any buyer would probably want that serice done or they would take the cost of it off the price they offer you.

Modern synthetic oils don't break down with time.

If you are selling the bike, any prospective buyer will see the low mileage as a big plus.

A guy at work had the same question on his 1300 - the Honda shop said go by kms.

You could always use the service as a haggling tool when selling if necessary.

Thanks team for all of your comments. Spoke to the shop and they said it shouldn't be a problem but should get it serviced soon.
