Fair enough, only ever bought 2 new bikes, both Hondas....
The 89 VFR400R was a NZ new model costing $10 000 It might not look it in the photo, but I'd picked up a S/H tank, got some race fairings made up and painted and went racing!!!
Then traded it for $8000 on a brand new 1990 CBR600FL, had it a week before it fell over on the grass and put a crack in the fairing, right behind that little fox head sticker

    Small world

Stopped in at Sawyers/Motorad to pick up some R4 Superbike oil, which is very very slick, so I'll have the utmost lubrication possible for the track, thereby making it impossible to catch me, therefore... wait, where was I??

Oh yes, saw Jim2 and Linda_Blair Linda doing a recon run and Jim eyeing up the R6. Strangely enough I found myself looking at it even before I knew what Jim was doing there. I reckon you should buy it Jim, red IS a great color

First purchase I would suggest though, is an aftermarket pipe

I've had one. A 1990 GSXR250 for $5995, bought from Robert Futter at WMCC, who now sells Renault cars.

It was lovely to run it in and have that new bike smell lingering.

Fark me! Ditto! I knew I liked you for a reason.

One of my favourite bikes. I thrashed the nuts off mine. My mechanic used to give me shit about boiled brake fluid and having to replace footpegs after every meeting.

I never, ever fell off it either. It's the one bike I've owned that I could just thrash to the utter limit. I remember one track day where there was a pillion session, and the girl that jumped on the back nearly jumped off when her right boot touched down in turn one at Manfield. She thought we'd crashed. She was a bit put out when I said I was taking it easy.

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I didn't realise you had already bought a new bike! I'm glad to see you got your priorities sorted

I'm looking forward to going for a ride with you and Jim2, and everyone else ofcourse!

Don't think I've heard a new R6 being ridden for a decent amount of time

Well I had to do something to keep you behind me Dave - that fizzer of mine struggled against the R1. Then again, it was restricted to 77HP the last time I rode with you.

Nah seriously, the bike's the only thing I've managed to sort out yet after the fire.

We have a contractor coming around on Monday to decide whether to repair the gargre or knock the sucker down and start again.

I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to itemise everything, clean out the gargre (with the help of Embassy Flooring, who have been awesome ) and looking around at bikes, power tools, more bikes, camping gear, more bikes ...you know the drill. Oh, and spending most nights at the computer looking at bikes.

Now I can spend nights looking for information on my new bike...

    They look crashed.

I rather have a go at making a bike look crashed after a reasonable amount of time looking uncrashed, rather than buying it looking damaged. What's up with the UFO-shaped instrument cover/fly screen?

    Thanks for the thought though.

yes I know what you mean - the guys I know with them love 'em - personally i think 'fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down' - but they go good. an acquired taste.

I had a chance to jump off Daytona 650 and on to R6 out at Kiwi rider. The daytona has the looks and goes almost as hard as the R6 - in fact has better torque - but 'tis 3k more.

I took a new R1 for a belt earlier in the week too - just sick. my licence would last 2 weeks.

Jim2: Might catch you on the hill or in the Rapa this w/end - the weather forecast is good, particularly for Sunday. Will keep an eye out for the Red Streak.

Celtic6 - congrats on your new toy!!!

Excellent choice of bike! I've been very happy with mine and would buy another one.

If I remember correctly the R and S models have a direct coupling to the alternator while the later models added a rubber bush. It is the rubber bush that fails so you're probably OK on that front with the S model. If you haven't already done so, I suggest lubing the choke cable as they are known to jam. Mine was frozen when I bought the bike and got stuck again about six months later.

Otherwise the RF seems a really strong bike and handles fairly neutrally. I played around with my rear shock settings as I found the back was skipping about a bit, but the previous owner had wound all the settings up way too high!?

You can download a service manual from here.

    Have fun!
