I've been given heaps of bikes for free, some going, some not,as payment for work done or ''just get it out of here''.The best one was the Kermit green C50,it was 8 yrs old with 19,000km on the clock when I got it and it was my primary commuter on Waikeke Island, and even brought it to Auckland a couple of times.Park anywhere, cost nothing to run, carry all sorts of shit cause you could ride with one hand...my weapon of choice on a cold wet day...
It's hard to think of the cheapest bike, they have all been cheap - it's what I do.Maybe the 1973 Suzuki TS400,I got this for $100 in 1988,it hadn't gone for about 3 yrs and I spent an afternoon getting it going. It had been used on the Canterbury Plains and was geared to hell and gone again,I'd never get it into top on Waiheke.I didn't like the 19in front wheel and fitted a TM front end on - and it has the honour of being the only bike to dump me on a gravel road.Later I used it on the Waiheke dirt track, keeping the TM forks, but fitting the 19in wheel back in,I also fitted a TM top end and other goodies...a TS/TM hybrid.I raced it for 4 yrs, having the best fun in my life, totaly reliable unless I broke something, the number of crashes I had on it would be in the 3 figures. On the day I left Waiheke in 1996 it wouldn't fit in the truck,so I sold it for $200...twice what I paid for it,I thought that was pretty good considering the thrashing I gave it - oh,what a mug!
The 1997 DT230 I am buying at the moment for $4500 is the most expensive bike I have ever bought,by $2500,this is kinda scary for me,but I sold 4 bikes to gather the money together.I have never insured a bike, they have never been worth enough to worry about, but it worries me enough to think about insuring this one...
[EDIT] oh,silly me...my first bike,a 1956 BSA Bantam Major D3 150cc was the cheapest at $60,sold it for $100,the first and last time I made a profit on a bike...
