    Handle Bar Grips

    Hey guys -

Have just taken off the standard grips to put on some better ones. Problem is - I cant get the grip all the way on.

I got it on by cuping my hand and hitting the end so it was pushed on by air - but now i cant hit it anymore because of the metal handle bar in the way, i cant physically pull it further on because its too damn hard.

People have said boil it with hotwater and stuff, but its already on the bike! Any suggestions? Please help !

    Thanks

    Shade

I've done one of two things, mainly on my dirt bikes. If the grips are soft sometimes I have succeeded in turning them inside out and rolling them on. Other times to get them on and to stick as well I have liberally applied contact glue and slipped them on straight away when the glue is wet and slippery. Then you just have to wait 24 hours or so for the glue to set instead of the normal method of letting contact glue set and then have the contact grip on application - which you can't do with something you want to slide on.

Your bike would have bar weights on the ends wouldn't it so the grips would have to be the type with no outer ends on them? If you can't persuade them on any further maybe you got to take them off and start again. Try the roll off inside out if you have to to get them off then try the slippery glue trick. Just wipe off all the excess straight away after you slip the grip on.

Failing that just keep stroking the inner end of them to stretch them on - patience is the key to that. Just watch the blindness that might result.
    Cheers

I have a hard job getting rubbers on too.

To get it off,as Merv says maybe you can roll it off.If not get a can of CRC or such like, put the tubey thing in the nozil, put a small screwdriver between bar and grip...squirt,twist and pull and swear.

To put them on - pour petrol inside, slip em on and when it evaporates they are there for good.

Petrol works fine but do not use too much so you soak the outside as it may affect the outer grip. Remember that they are often two different sizes so get them round the right way. Throttle may be slightly bigger. Do not use CRC as it is a lubricant to put it back on as you do not want to make it permanantly slippery only long enough to slide the grips on. Use anything that evaporates quickly but will not eat the grip. If you get them off ok you can put them in boiling water before fitting but you have to be quick. (Did'nt work for me)
I'm one of the worlds best riders. I can wheelie, I can stoppie, I can stunt, hell I can get my shoulder down. I could keep up with Rossie if I wanted to race.

Then I go from bed to bike and somehow it all turns to crap.

Best thing to use is hairspray - spray it in the grip then slide on - and then it will stick like mad - works a treat

I guess that works a bit like the wet contact glue. Can't say I've tried the hairspray - I don't use the stuff and wife doesn't seem to either so there is none in the house.

Yeah hairspray completely rocks if you need to get the grips on or off. Used to always have a couple of cans of it at the bike shop I worked at.

or instead of petrol or hairspray, meths always used to work for my pushbike. - same as petrol i suppose, slippery when you put it on, evaporates in minutes.

    Ta guys,

Ended up geting like a bottle which will slide over the handle bar but not over the end of the grip, that way i could just keep whacking the bottle end till the grip got all the way on.

Next time i'll try hairspray me thinks!

Beautiful day for a ride, so i will see ya'll out there!

Hairspray is excellent, but if you have compressed air and air gun handy thats even quicker.
